The only furnace I've really used is the Smelter, and only to get an Anvil. What you might be remembering is how stone can be difficult to use when trying to build anything, since there is no access to the Stone menu.

I've usually been able to get around this through Adv reactions from Wanderer's, to get wood, and then charcoal, as well as metal bars from armor/shields/weapons I grab from whatever Fort/Town I'm at.

because of the "fps-trap" bug which killed all of my cool sites :/

Can you elaborate a bit more on this bug? I was playing genesis reborn, and a generic werewolf lair was fine the first 3 or so times I visited it. But then it suddenly got horrendously slow, to the point I had to leave change on the keyboard and go do something else in order to move away far enough to fast travel. It must have been 20 seconds per turn. Ive no idea what the heck caused such an enormous slow down on an area that was previously fine.

If you had used reveal in DFHack you would have found out.

Basically a whole lot of animals, and then some.

you could pull the wood from hamlets and those respawn every time you reload the area. So you don't really need an axe for wood unless you want to do something fancy.
With advfort you could easily avoid bogeymen now. You rob the only thing that makes them a threat which is "no easy way for you to get into shelter." by having the ability to make a fort or dig down the cackling will end. build a floor over a edge and duck under it or channel a small hole then dig one direction to make a roof over your head.

Oh, dang I wish I had kept a save so I could go back and have a look.

So is there any current workaround or anything for this bug? Is it inevitable, or can I do things to prevent it from occuring?

A workaround would be slayrace ANIMAL_NAME_HERE.
