Where do hobbits come from in the LOTR universe?
« on: May 16, 2013, 09:46:20 pm »

I've read through the Hobbit, the three Lord of the Rings books, and the Silmarillion, but I still don't know the origin story of hobbits. In the Silmarillion, the various races are given origin stories with exacting detail... except for hobbits. The only mention I can recall is at the very end where it is said that the little people of the river were the ones who brought Sauron's ring of power to mount doom and destroyed it. Are they an evolution of another race? Or are they like Tom Bombadil and never adequately explained?

I'm happy to report that hobbits never existed, despite many claims to the contrary. Their bones were placed in the ground by Manwë to test our faith.

@Footjob, you can microwave most grains I've tried pretty easily through the microwave, even if they aren't packaged for it.

It's never explicitly stated, though they're one of the most recent peoples to appear. Something like two thousand years before the Lord of the Rings, that is, ~1000 of the Third Age, the three strains of Hobbit came out of (i can't remember where, it was a river southeast of the shire. Maybe near Eriador) and spread out.

The only way that we can really guess which Ainur is responsible for them is through their traits.

-Dwarves are children of Aule, the Smith, and their traits reflect his.
-Elves and Humans reflect Illuvatar, the Supreme ainur.
-Now, hobbits are supposed to be the most relaxed people, who simply enjoy life and a good bit of food. They're also very courageous as a whole. To me, this sounds like they're children of Tulkas, the Wrestler, the most junior of the Valar.

It's my belief that Hobbits are a pygmy subspecies of Human. At least that's what I can infer from what I've read.

From what I remember, they had been there since the beginning of time, hiding in shadows and their holes.

I gotta agree with Reudh, only they often figure their way out with cleverness; is there a clever Valar? Otherwise I think Tulkas.
