Goblin ambushers waiting... to ambush?
« on: May 16, 2013, 02:00:04 am »

I always assumed that goblin ambushers pathed toward open forts without fail.  Every time I found one ambush party, a second one wasn't far behind.  I killed one ambush party, then retreated back into my tunnel network to lure the next one underground.  The gates were open and there was a clear path into my fort.  I waited. And waited.  And WAITED.  Months went and nothing happened.  As soon as my dwarves poked their heads above ground, the ambushers came out of nowhere with a vengeance.  Have things changed now where invisible enemies now sit and wait to actually ambush dwarves?

I've seen behavior similar to this once.  In my last fort I had a strange situation where thieves would wander onto the map edges and sit there, doing nothing.  Only after I sent patrols out to did I ever find them, and at one point I had what must have been 10 invisible thieves standing around doing nothing on the map edges.  During that period I never received any ambushes or sieges.  Once I cleared all of the "stuck" thieves out, things went back to normal.

I suspect it could be something similar, though I have no explanation on what the cause could be.  I haven't seen anything like it since.

How large was your fortress at the time the first ambushers arrived? Maybe it was a one-ambush "wave" and you had the bad luck of letting your dwarves out just in time for another.

is it guaranteed that ambushers only arrive once per season, and thus always all at the same time?  I've certainly seen ambushes where only a single small squad of like 6 show up.

And enemies never seem to path directly to your fortress without fail.  Sometimes they hang around, sometimes they move, sometimes they seem to wait for other groups.  Sometimes they hesitate before charging into traps, even when the leader isn't caged.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

are you sure they are goblins? Humans commonly attack only whats in a above ground light(whit a above ground path too) for a time, then after some time, they start to go underground.

Population of 43 dwarves.  The raiders were definitely goblins that time, though I've also been getting kobold raiding parties, which is new for me.  I kind of like that they're not so predictable.  Now when trading, I make sure to send the military to the surface to camp out near the tunnel exits before the caravan departs.

The kobolds atack if they steal enghoun stuff of you, and yes, they can attack almost whenever in the year.
So definetely, you just waited engounh time to get another ambush.

It's spelt *attack, *enough and *definitely. I see that English isn't your first language, so I thought I could help.

The check for ambushes, caravans and sieges happens at the same time. As a result, they all arrive simultaneously. Caravans will detect sieges before you do and therefore not show up if a siege is in process. Ambushes all spawn at the same time with a variable number of squads. It's possible for them to be led by snatched humans, elves and dwarfs, possibly from your very fort. It is probably the ambush you received only had one squad, or only one ambush arrived that month or season.

You're right! Just read my signature.
I wrote "attack" and "definitely" knowing it was wrong, I don't know how to spell "enough"(but now I do!).
