Floodgates

If my dwarf places a floodgate one z-level below ground, will he be able to walk over it on the z-level above the floodgate (the ground)?

No they do not create walk-able floor tiles above them, but creating a floor tile above yourself won't affect the floodgate in any way.

Does that mean you shouldn't listen to my pervious sentence and infact listen to everything I say?

the wiki is not explicit.  I kinda thought they did create walkable tiles.

While adding magma to anything will make it dwarfy, adding the word "magma" to your post does not necessarily make it funny.

I think that would create issues with using floodgates as a trap, since opening the gate would then remove the "floor" above. This could be used to trap creatures too large for bridges, or floodgates would also need extra protection from them. So, having to create a floor yourself does make sense
