The 5 billionth Archer Training Help topic
« on: May 04, 2013, 02:42:05 am »

I know there are literally TONNES of these, but I'm doing things right as far as the last ones I've seen are concerned.

4 man squad, set to never train (I hear that training = melee and archery training = in free time)
10 archery targets in a line, each its own room filling the room, with the shooting direction correct, each assigned to the squad to train, sleep, indv. equip. and squad equip.
Wooden and metal ammo stockpile in the room
All squad members have crossbow and quiver
No armor assigned ATM as it's early on
250 wooden bolts C/T (again, no metal ammo as its early on) (I have over 1000 wooden bolts thanks to my first artifact being from a woodcrafter)
All have their labors disabled and so are always idle

At the start, there was usually one of them at the range at any time I looked. I haven't seen one practicing in over three months now. What am I doing wrong?

Also, I'm not near a necromancer tower, please don't suggest "get a trapped zombie and necromancer so you can shoot at him constantly." I also haven't got a ton of prisoners yet and even so I don't know how to release them. I'm looking for a way to make them train on archery targets, not on enemies.

do you have them doing other work?  it's low priority (like, idling) level activity

They're doing no other work, all labors are disabled, including hauling and cleaning.

Is the squad marked as active for your current military alert? If so, turn them off.

Scheduled 'training' for archers occurs at a barracks (i.e. it's melee training). Archers need to be inactive in order to use the archery range.

They are indeed inactive (in fact I didn't know that option existed)

You have to manually set them to inactive using the military -> schedule screen, is that what you are referring to?

I haven't ever heard this and I believe it wouldn't work. I can make them train easily just making sure that the squad is active and it has scheduled to train at that archery range.

Setting the entire room as the archery range might be an issue. I ony designate the channel between where I want them to stand and the target (with the lane demarked by walls to make it 1x3 or 1x4) as the range and never have any issues with marksdwarfs.

Inactive may be the wrong term to use here (since it depends on your setup, and the game uses the term alert for 2 different things). Dwarves can be in the training rooms for different reasons.

So to clarify;-

* Under squad scheduling you can set the number of dwarves that are required to be on duty each month.
* Dwarves will only be on duty IF the unit is 'on alert' for your currently selected civilian alert. (i.e. if you get a message each time one goes on duty 'Urist has become an Xdwarf').
* Military dwarves on duty will spar, organize\attend demonstrations, or slack off (sleep) in the barracks. Archers will not practice shooting if they are on duty. Anyone you do see using the archery range is off-duty.
* Military dwarves will train on their own when off duty if they have no other jobs available - personal combat drills for melee or archery practice for crossbowmen.

- Elite units may cause confusion because they don't work at all (they forget their jobs as soon as they become elite). If they're off-duty they'll default to personal combat drills\archery practice due to the lack of other options.

That fixed it - just had to add walls between the targets and now they're training much more regularly. Thanks everyone!
