Armor, helmets, and replace clothing question
« on: May 02, 2013, 07:14:28 pm »

I setup squads using the standard 'metal' uniform.

I noticed that my dwarfs refused to wear the bronze helmets I made. So, I figured I should set "replace clothing". This caused them to wear the helmets... but later I found out that some people in my newest squad were *extremely* unhappy because their uniforms weren't ready yet, so they were out stark naked in the cold (well actually, right on top of a vulcano, but I guess they don't care).

What is the normal/best thing to do with uniforms? Set to replace clothing and make sure a uniform is ready before creating the squad? Use "over clothing" (but how to force helmets?)? Or switch between the two when the uniform is complete?

Try Replace clothing, but include tunics and trousers as part of the uniform. - That way even if the armor bins get taken on a tour of magma forges the troops will still have some clothes on.

That's probably a good idea. Should I include civvy shoes as well?

Do any other items except for caps/helmets cause problems with military refusing to wear equipment?

Also, I often make both mail shirts and breast plates, but they never seem to wear both. Should I customize the uniform to include both, or is it redundant?

The wiki says they can wear multiple layers, but I've found they... don't. Mail shirts cover the upper arms, breatplates don't, but breastplates have a higher armor value. I've had legendary drawfs to serious wounds to their unprotected arms before, so I always go with mail shirts.

not wearing helmets is a very common thing now that caps are shaped too. If you produce some hoods they should swap them as soon as the cap gets a bit damaged though

iirc shoes block high\low boots, so leave them out.
Dwarves will wear mail shirts and breastplates (and a tunic). I'm going to go out on a limb and blame Urist McBinhauler again. Creating armor stockpiles that don't permit bins will save you a lot of headaches. (You can always have a low-quality armor one with bins for storing goblinite.)

If I don't have enough armor to protect everyone's precious modesty, I do this to make sure they wear whatever armor is available while still staying covered:

1) Assign each dwarf the desired armor pieces;
2) Select "replace clothing";
3) Wait for dwarves to take off their clothes and equip all the available armor;
4) De-select "Replace clothing," and then they'll put their clothes back on, except for pieces that won't fit over their new armor.

When you have plenty of armor for everyone, you can just keep it set to "replace clothing."
