How to find a vampire?
« on: May 01, 2013, 08:19:14 pm »

I've recently had my first murder (Well first by my own Dorfs) and the corpse was found drained of blood, I googled this (I try to avoid spoilers as much as possible) and realized I have a vampire  >:(

I am led to believe a message something like, "needs alcohol to get through the working day but doesn't remember the last time he/she had any." but the only Dorf who has anything beside, "Needs alcohol to get through the working day" is my Mayor.

Could this be the Vampire? If so how can I deal with him or keep him away from the blood supply called my Dorfs?

Oh sorry forgot to mention, I have a massive supply of alcohol so it isn't scarce at all.

That is indeed the vampire.
Here is the link to the wiki page on vampires which should satisfy your quest for knowledge.

For me, it is usually the long list of previous membership of other mountainhomes. It looks like you do have a vampire(AFAIK on average, dwarves are only former members of 2-3 tops). This only works for vampires that are old. New vampires won't have had the chance to move around much, but they are relatively rare.

Easiest way is to deal with a vampire is to forbid their door when they are inside their room. Alternatively you can make a lever that only the vampire can pull and tell them to pull it repeatedly. Once inside, forbid the door - this technique allows you to choose which room to lock the vampire in.

If I can manage to trap him in a room with an armour stand/ Weapon rack and enlist him in his own squad, Will he be of use when I need him? I read that Vampires are naturally stronger but not sure to what effect.

Vampires are absolute crap at combat.  Speed kills.  Due to sobriety, vampires don't have speed, even incredibly agile ones.

If you want your vampire to potentially save your fortress, what you do is you build him into a wall with a lot of happy thought generators, and safeguards against unhappy thoughts (much spare clothing to replace the vampire's as it wears so it won't have to go naked, nor endure clothing rotting away, for example).  Your vampire won't die of hunger or thirst, and if it's walled in, the only thing that can reach it to kill it is a ghost (unlikely).  So long as you keep it happy enough not to go insane, your fortress will always have at least one living member, and it will survive no matter how bad invasions get.  This gives you time to wait them out and rebuild with migrants, eventually.

Listen up: making a thing a ‼thing‼ doesn't make it more awesome or extreme.  It simply indicates the thing is on fire.  Get it right or look like a silly poser.

It's useful to keep a ‼torch‼ handy.

For future reference, mayorship is based on the social skills of the dwarves, and vampires tend to have had a lot of time to pump up their social skills, since they've been alive for hundreds of years.
