This reminds me of this old thread. Lots of tips in there, if I remember correctly.

I would ask why fire can burn two men to death without getting hot enough to burn a book, but then I read "INEXTINGUISHABLE RUNNING KAMIKAZE RADIOACTIVE FLAMING ZOMBIE" and realized that logic, reason, and physics are all occupied with crying in the corner right now.

Unless you airlock children apart from each other that could be a problem. I'm at the point where I want to try an semi-isolated civ so I'm thinking island + one one tile walkway to limit what the dorf caravan brings through the cavern. Set migrants to zero once there is a suitable seed population.
Why bother with that?  Build a 6x5 "welcome" drawbridge, designate a 5x5 burrow in front of it, assign new dwarves to that burrow.  Once they're all there, open the drawbridge.
