I back and I'm making a death pit.
« on: April 19, 2013, 05:44:03 pm »

For starters it's great to be back here with you guys we have a really awesome community here. I've been on the Ace of Spades forum for a little while and I just don't like the community there, everyone is constantly complaining and bickering about imbalances in the game and such.
I'm sorry I ever cheated on you with another forum.

So onto my death pit. I've dug a nice deep pit of 19 z-levels deep and I have the capability to put a titan (it shoots fire) and 2 forgotten beasts (one's a giant beetle and the other's made of steam) and perhaps even a Cyclops (he might get burned by the titan though) in the bottom of pit. My plan is to drop goblins into the pit so they will be hurt and stunned by the impact 19 z-levels before they are viciously attacked by all the monsters. However I'm interested to know, if my monsters get hit by flying goblins would it kill them? And should I try to keep the titan separate from the rest because of his fire?

1)19 z-levels will probably cause most goblins to die instantly upon impact with the ground. If you really only wanted them to be stunned/injured you should try more like 4-8.
2)Yes, falling goblins could potentially kill your FB's/titans.
3)The titan may cause problems with the other ones because of his firebreathing, but I wouldn't be too worried unless your pit is growing grass or something else flammable.

You should have three pits, and make a dwarfputer that periodically changes which beastie gets to kill the goblins.

i used to dig pits like you, then i took a rutherer mount to the bridge...which caused the bridge to malfunction and not work...which caused the goblins to walk past the bridge and into my fort...which resulted in some fun as i gave in to death and released the forgotten beasts...yea.

now i make mazes full of traps that i can flood with water if goblins decide to stubbornly idle where their dead squad leader is, they die/get caged if they advance down the maze (obviously).

Have you considered using the water to keep pushing them down the trap hall?

I make sure that even if my bridge was disabled I'd still be able to stop them with bridges blocking the ends of the tunnel where it surfaces into my place.
I once made a water flooding trap when I was a lot newer to the game but due to poor design of my fort the goblin ambushes broke though a different door into my fortress which meant they never went in my drowning trap.

Would the FB made of steam still be damaged by fire? Steam is obviously water in its gaseous state so if it's already a gas then fire shouldn't affect it too much should it?

How do you make a computer I've never tried to learn it sounded like it would take ages to make one.

water pressure is very weak if its only 1 Z level, goblin's would rather drown than move down the maze, they arent pushed by it at all.

It's just a lot of mechanics, really. Pressureplates activate bridges that activate other pressureplates that activate the part of the deathpit you want the gobbos to fall into.

Probably not, however FB's made of steam are some of the weakest out there, so you should be warned that a single punch from a goblin could kill it easily.

I have two death pits in my current fort. One is about 13z levels deep and the bottom is a 3x3 room full of retracting spike traps. This is for monsters I want dead, the drop itself is often fatal. The other pit is about 5z levels deep, where I throw goblins, trolls and elves as my militias training fodder. This 5 level drop typically breaks 4 bones, but can also sometimes be fatal. So yes I would say 19z levels is probably overkill if you plan to have things fight it out at the bottom.

you can make it 19 z-levels deep but still drop stuff from only 7 z-level if you do it right.  Remember that dwarves will pit creatures over open spaces, but if the pit has a hatch the dwarf will throw it down the hatch before closing it, so dwarves won't be frightened by the forgotten beasts.

I once had a fort with close to around 200 dwarfs.  I also had a pit that I could drop stuff into. Problem was I never got to use it much so I burrowed all of them in there and set it to alert. Then pulled the lever. It was 10z levels deep and only 25 ish died. Maybe some broke each others falls?

It may depend on which version it was in. In an older version I found things wouldn't take damage if they landed on other creatures, most notably when I dropped a giant onto an elf hoping to make a satisfying squish. Both were unscathed from the experience :(
