Dwarven !!SCIENCE!! Outpost.
« on: April 23, 2013, 05:57:54 pm »

So I am going to make a science outpost of sorts. I will change the world gen to have lots of monsters and vampires. I want to know what things I should experiment. All I can think so far are:

- Were creature chambers and try to find safe ways to infect people and provide the creature with food if it doesn't work.

- Vampire chambers.

- Magma cannons.

- Plumbing system.

So I guess they are not really science experiments. But I just want cool and fun contraptions and creatures to have. Things to do. Not really megaprojects. I can't really explain what kind of thing I want but I hope you understand the type of thing that I mean.

EDIT: 200th post!

No one cares about your two hundredth post, and nothing in this post had anything to do with fire.

On that note, since you apparently want it to be a !!SCIENCE!! outpost then I would suggest setting things on fire and observing the results.

It has magma in the post. Also fire is a good idea. Just want some ideas for science experiments.

Fiddle with heat absorption and exchange, using fire, magma, water, and various solids in controlled environments to generate varying amounts of steam. See if it is possible to insulate a steam generating source and how far the heat can be transferred, and how various material surroundings influence that.

How are you going to go about making a plumbing system? What will its purpose be?

You should make hot/cold showers for dwarves in their apartments! The "Hot" lever scalds them horrifically with steam and the cold lever floods the room.

Imagine you're driving a car. Push the gas pedal to the floor. Close your eyes. Remain this way for ten minutes while turning the wheel at whim. This is Dwarf Fortress.
I don't mean to alarm you, but it appears that your Dwarves are all in fact elephants.

I love how these things "go together" on this forum.

Test something that you might want to start including in all your subsequent forts.

Like when you start out you might not even have a door, until you "experiment" and use doors, of any kind I mean not just an actual door.

Find some new contraption and implement it in your scheme of operations, minecarts are the newest thing.

You could wait and screw around with tree science at the update.

Potential ideas:

May i suggest that testing the effects of burning/magma (and settings) on biologicals (dwarfs/nobles/elves/gobs) with and without netherwood as impromptu "passive"-shielding. EXCUSE FOR BURNING !!SCIENCE!!

And of course...the magma digger contraption..it doesnt dig magma...it digs WITH magma..i would suggest using it to dig ice somehow at first ;) (maybe with some subjects for a  steambath too)

The creature sorter..using water to sort them to various "good places" (probs need way to save babies from it too unless you dont hehe)

Insanitarium a "device" to help various entities go insane in whatever ideal ways. And ways to carefully (or with FUN!) finish them off.

the opposite of an Insanitarium..a "device" to keep entities sane and healthy however in the smallest minimal space (excepting just staying in a cage)

Pond-erizer a contraption to train air breathers in swimming...while they are in a natural dwarf fortress pond (and keeps them there long enough they got some skill) Bonus points for figuring out how to get it to train other things too. And yes this means without removing any of its "natural slopes"

The blender- simple and easy way..to make a drowning area that using the pressure of that water coming in chop them up for the maximum "blending"

Spy vs Spy rooms (spys that bomb/stab/otherwise try to kill each other at same time)--better if they actaully benefit the fortress
1st one...two rooms...each makes the other room puncture the spy within til one is dead.
2nd ideas?

the Freefall gadget-so simple so elegant so stunning that you can get into freefall (yes this one is known..lol)

Pingpong Table..turn entities into the ball Suggest 3+ levers(or other subdevice) for each side to help control it.

1 Prelaunched Arrow defence and 2 automated defences turned on or off by archery practice..sounds silly..but figure out how to turn archery practice into something more than mere practice and the known practice arrow retrieval ideas. Ideally would have minimal dwarven death ;)

Hmm, I suppose if there was a solid that melted at a temp slightly higher then the dwarven room temp you could use it to sense if temperatures were changing. You could mod in a bunch of bars that you could just make, and use them as an indicator of the temp of a room. This would let you see if your magma heated water showers were indeed hotter...

Not sure if there would be a real benifit. But I would have tunnels dug between rooms and you could just pop open the walls and have water or magma pour out. I would also have some way have either a little or a lot come out. I would probably have some kind of resevoir on top of my fortress that would have to be filled every once and a while. To make it easy I could go on a volcano aquifer map and just build my resevoirs under those and my fort under the resevoirs. Then I could have a drainage system that could just drain into the caverns or into another large resevoir to be either drained or used for other tests, drowning chambers, etc. Maybe I could have a final lever that obsidianizes the entire fortress. Thanks for all the ideas everyone. Post anymore if you can think of them. Ill report back any finds. If I am sucessful. The first thing that I will probably do is the plumbing system.

It seems that magma must be flowing in order to melt ice, and I believe the reason for this is still a mystery. Perhaps investigate the cause, and figure out ways to melt ice with non-flowing magma.

Develop a system for reliably melting the fat off a dwarf without killing or disabling him.

Develop a system for reliably blinding a dwarf without killing or disabling him.

Develop a system for reliably numbing a dwarf without killing or disabling him.

Experiment with the spacing of wooden buildings in caverns needed to attract a [BUILDINGDESTROYER:2] reliably in a chain from the edge of the map, to the center of the map.
