I've had many forts before and only read about people having this problem and never running into it myself until now. I've got my millitary commander, I've equipped him with full iron gear from head to toe (Iron helm, Iron breastplate, Iron leggings, Iron left and right gauntlet and 2 iron boots and an Iron mace.No shield for now) He equips the breastplate, the leggings and the mace but nothing else. I searched through his inventory and made sure, I made sure I had equipped it to him. I even went and found the actual armor in the stockpiles.

I also changed the dwarf with a different dwarf but still the same exact problem. Any Ideas?

Specify the uniform to be worn replacing clothing and, of course, make sure to assign it. m>e>U>select uniform and squad>shift+enter

I changed it so it would replace clothing and it worked! Thanks! But I've have numerous other forts and I've never had to make it so it replaced clothing? I also never chose the uniform ( i always just clicked no uniform) ?

Perhaps you were playing an older version?

Some civilian clothing interferes with armor.  In particular, caps are "shaped" in the most recent versions, which means you cannot wear a cap and a helm at the same time any more.

When it worked for you before, either you were in an older version like Em3rgency suggests (where caps weren't shaped), or your dwarf had less civilian attire on, or different civilian attire that didn't interfere as much.

I've got a sort of a similar problem: a certain macedwarf of mine refuses to pick up a mace, no matter if I assign him a particular one or tell him to use whatever one he can. He obediently equips everything else, and also used to wield a weapon as ordered to. I'm sure I have unused maces.

What's wrong?

CAN he equip a mace? Maybe he has lost his hands? Or has grasping impaired? Check under his health if you have a chief medical dwarf, if not, looking at his body parts/wounds screen might give you an idea if hes injured.

I definetly wasn't in an older version. I completely up-to-date with the game version and I've never encountered this problem before. I didn't download a new game update when I started this fortress so, I don't believe it was that. I also don't think it was my civillian attire because I have numerous forts (in this version) where I've never had this problem before?

Does he keep grabbing the same weapon? He may have grown attached to it.
Try forbidding the weapon he's going after.

Use <v> to look at the dwarf's inventory and see what he's actually wearing.

Also observe him for a while and see what he's doing.  I've occasionally seen dwarves that get stuck in a loop where they'll equip one thing, then drop it and equip another thing, then drop that and re-requip the first thing, back and forth forever.  (Though that was mostly in an older version....)

She's perfectly healthy and all her limbs are in the right place. The current setting is "indiv choice, melee" and she still doesn't use any weapon. In addition, I discovered a marksdwarf with the same problem. He equips armour, a quiver and ammo just right - but not a crossbow. Should I submit the issue to the Mantis bugtracker?

is the 2 iron boots the problem? i think that things that are in pairs you only need to select one. so two boots means 2 pairs of boots. i'm not sure if they will fit.

Try putting specific weapon in her uniform, she might take 'indiv choice' to mean it's ok to not have a weapon and be a wrestler since she doesn't have any weapon skills.

They don't have any wounds preventing the use of one of their hands?

also is it exact match only or partial match. partial match gives lots of equipment mismatch errors.
