Help with playing on a network
« on: April 16, 2013, 02:33:25 pm »

Lets get the hard part out of the way; this at school. No, the teachers dont care. Yes, they know what im doing.

I just want to know if there are any known bugs and fixes on playing on a networked drive. The only real problem i am having, aside from loading time, is the fact that it crashes upon loading a save, or a world with a fortress that has ended. I have edited a couple raws into the folders, but no changes to entity_default except for the removal of the [civ-controllable] tag

Help me pl0x?

The easiest thing that I did when I played at school was to simply copy DF over to the computer I was on before playing and then delete it when I was done. That solves the problems with networked drives and loading times.

As for the crash I am going to suspect your modding as the largest chance of causing this. What exactly did you do (or at least be a little more specific)? Is there anything showing up in the errorlog.txt? Did you edit the general raws (raw/objects) or the save raws (data/save/regionX/raw/objects)?

You say you removed [CIV_CONTROLLABLE] from the dwarves, but did you add it to any other entities? Unless you edit the world-gen settings the game requires you to have at least one controllable civilization.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I have added a total of 2 entities, and i had to copy paste for a template from the dwarves in entity_default, cause the wiki is blocked. Other than that, its just the reaction_smelter files and removing aquifers from the inorganic_layer file. I probably dun goofed somewhere in there, but i think i might have fixed it with replacing a new set of raws with the entity and creature files that i edited.
Nothing shows up in errorlog.txt, otherwise i would have this problem fixed

Im gonna try some things, then be right back

Keep in mind that you can't add/remove 99% of things from an already generated world, and attempting to do so can cause crashes.

After a couple of fresh installs, no errors when generating a new world, now to just launch it succesfully!

Hooray! I have solved my issue, with help from you.
Recap:
I fresh-installed new raws to replace all files, keeping my mods to seperate locations
I copied the DF executable to the current machine i am using, eliminating the network drive
Small edits on the fresh raws (removed aquifers and the civ_controllable tag from entity_default)

Boy, there sure are a lot of text files on my desktop

Note to self, editing the raws at runtime is a very bad idea

Honestly, I play at work on breaktime, and it runs fine off a jump drive.

you can leave the whole thing on a thumb/jump/usb/stick drive.  No need to copy files.  Just unplug when you're done.
