Couple of questions about happiness
« on: April 22, 2013, 06:42:21 pm »

If a dwarf becomes miserable, will he ever be happy again? Assuming that you make an effort to make some changes to ensure that.

If you noble dies because of a tantrum, will someone else be nominated to replace him or her? Can my fort still become the capital?

Dwarven happiness is a cumulative total of all their current thoughts. Each though has an intrinsic + or - value to happiness that is added to the total, with the amount become half as much after 2 seasons and vanishing completely after a year. Certain thoughts can occur multiple times, though they will only appear on the thoughts screen once. Depending on where their total currently ranks dwarves can be in a variety of different happiness levels. (So yes, once a dwarf is made miserable it can become happy again either through the addition of happy thoughts, the lack of new bad thoughts combined with time, or a combination of the two. Personally I find the fastest way to get happy dwarves is to make a Mist generator over your dining room or main hallway.)

I believe right now succession is broken, so once a noble dies that is it. Your fort should still be able to become the capital however, because the arrival of the king is not actually tied to the level of your current noble.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Do you happen to know or have a link to which thoughts can apply recursively?

Pretty much all of the thoughts listed on the thought page on the wiki can occur multiple times. Really the only ones that can't are those that naturally have long cooldowns to their causes (such as miscarriage for example).
