Do channels kill plants?

Simple question, do channels kill plants or can you gather them, but just not see them?

I'm pretty sure they don't prevent plants from growing, as there've been reports of towercaps blocking floodgates open.  But if you're talking putting a channel on top of a plant, I think that kills 'em.

I'm not sure if you can gather them, but I have noticed that if you build a channel over them it makes the channel green. And then if you run lava through said channel, it burns up the plant, destroys that area of the channel, and leaves ashes.

small point of reference:
I've had a floodgate blocked by a towercap tree, but there was no channel there: the floodgate was opened to create a flood, not fill a channel.
