Making a fort for an adventurer was the basic premise of the game when DF 2d first came out. You'd create and break a fortress and have an adventurer come explore and loot all the stuff you made and read the full engraving on the walls and battle the HFS.

From my own experiments, dwarves constantly triumph with boring consistency against elves, humans and goblins when similarly equipped and matched in groups. I'm not sure how martial trances work, seems to do with how many enemies are targeting the dwarf but it seemly works much better then 'enrage' like with other races (which has to do with how much damage they've taken, unless they are a honey badger, of whom are always enraged as soon as they are an enemy of something) or have other qualities that make them more survivable or lethal then others.

From my own experiences, which aren't many, I'd have to say, the only way I can actually survive a game is with a dwarf. Practically all of my successful games are with dwarves, and my only successful game with another race was one I modded in, so I'd have to agree with the OP. I think it's mainly because of the martial trance. It just seems that my dwarves won't die by weapon, I always have to abandon them after entering a cavern, and being unable to find my way out.
