Child abduction
« on: March 22, 2013, 08:59:23 pm »

The way that the goblins every now and then pop up to steal the dwarven children got me thinking... There are many fairy-tales and myths that goblins and fairies would steal human children and replace them with their own (to cause mischief and whatnot), this child would then grow up believing it is a human and then be chased out of town with claims that it was mutated demon spawn (or something like that  :P) or would remain in town getting up to all sorts of no good...

I would like to put this suggestion forward to add more depth to child abduction instead of just 'abduct and rescue'
also before I get bombarded with 'planned' or anything else, I simply posted this to ask people opinion on the matter.  :)

I think captured dwarves should return to your fort, sneak into the room of your legendary millitia commander, stab him, and then pull the doomsday lever before leaving if you don't discover them

Goblin changelings would certainly be interesting. :)
It's still kind of up in the air WHY goblins are abducting children, but I don't think that was any more defined in the original folklore. That's just what they do, I guess. One problem I notice is that DF goblins aren't implied to have any kind of shapechanging ability. Where would they get the dwarf children to leave in your fort? Would they just shuffle the babies around from fortress to fortress like some kind of multinational game of baby roulette? Being completely bonkers would certainly be in character for them.

This stuff is a hot topic in other threads, so lets expand on the shape-shifting idea. No mythology is complete without things like doppelgangers and the creatures in Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn that steal peoples skin. Adding such creatures would add whole new moral/ethical and psychological aspects to the game. Imagine the Dwarf that you think is your bookkeeper, who shows none of the signs that a Vampire would thanks to having the bookkeepers memories, slowly funneling supplies to a goblin/human/elf outpost that are later used against you. Add your manager and broker to the conspiracy and you suddenly have a hoard of goblins equipped with steel and maybe even some adamantine. Que massive amounts of !!FUN!!.
