Tin / pewter / bronze
« on: March 17, 2013, 02:49:25 pm »

Hi,

I am playing a very rare mineral world and not only my embark (sphalerite and gold only so far) but my whole civilization embarassingly has neither a tin source nor an iron source. They do have some apparently traded (?) pewter, bronze and steel though. It occurred to me, however, that tin-copper alloys should be changeable into each other by adding more tin or copper. Rare traded pewter bars are my only source of tin and I would very much like to use it to get some weapon-grade metal.

This isn't a big problem because I am sitting on an island (no goblins -> i.e. no goblinite either!) and with pop cap 7 to try out natural growth and getting a few bronze and steel bars/items per year is entirely sufficient to build a strong army that can take on everything in some decades. But still, it would be nice. This isn't an issue for people who site on endless resources or can take everything from goblins, but as I wanted some scarcity in my game I decided to settle on an island this time and have neither.

This should be fairly easy to mod in. Let's see....
1 Tin + 1 Copper = 2 Bronze
2 Tin + 1 Copper = 3 Trifle Pewter
3 Tin + 1 Copper = 4 Fine Pewter

So by adding Tin...
2 Bronze + 1 Tin = 3 Trifle Pewter
3 Trifle Pewter + 1 Tin = 4 Fine Pewter

And adding Copper
2 Fine Pewter + 1 Copper= 3 Trifle Pewter
1 Trifle Pewter + 1 Copper = 2 Bronze

And, for the heck of it, Lead
3 Trifle Pewter + 1 Lead = 4 Lay Pewter

Examples are in reaction_smelter.txt in the raw folder. I may just add them myself. I guess more could be done with turning billon, rose gold, or electrum into black bronze or brass into nickel silver. Then there's that bismuth looking lonely, too....

To be pedantic and conserve the ratios:

1 Tin + 1 Copper = 2 Bronze
2 Tin + 1 Copper = 3 Trifle Pewter
3 Tin + 1 Copper = 4 Fine Pewter

Adding Tin:
2 Bronze + 2 Tin = 4 Trifle Pewter
3 Trifle Pewter + 3 Tin = 6 Fine Pewter

Adding Copper:
8 Fine Pewter + 1 Copper = 9 Trifle Pewter
3 Trifle Pewter + 1 Copper = 4 Bronze

unless I messed up :)

Well....let me double check my math here.
Bronze = 1/2 Copper
Trifle Pewter = 1/3 Copper
Fine Pewter = 1/4 Copper

And if I do my adding recipes....
(Bronze => Trifle Pewter)
2 Bronze + 1 Tin = 3 Trifle Pewter
2 * 1/2 + 0 = 3 * 1/3
1 = 1
(Trifle Pewter => Fine Pewter)
3 Trifle Pewter + 1 Tin = 4 Fine Pewter
3 * 1/3 + 1 * 0 = 4 * 1/4
1 = 1
(2 Fine Pewter + 1 Copper= 3 Trifle Pewter)
2 * 1/4 + 1*1 = 3 * 1/3
3/2 = 1
So that's wrong. But with yours:
(8 Fine Pewter + 1 Copper = 9 Trifle Pewter)
8 * 1/4 + 1*1 = 9*1/3
2 + 1 = 3
(1 Trifle Pewter + 1 Copper = 2 Bronze)
1 * 1/3 + 1*1 = 2 * 1/2
4/3 = 1
So that's wrong too... But again, with yours:
(3 Trifle Pewter + 1 Copper = 4 Bronze)
3 * 1/3 + 1 = 4 * 1/2
2 = 2

So I guess I needed some pedantry after all, at least at the copper-adding end of things.
