Magma under frozen pond only thawed it for a short time. Halp?

Does the magma have to be flowing? I'm in a freezing biome with no thawing period.

And the answer would be yes. Yes it does have to be flowing.

Channeled out one extra tile, and that was enough to get the water going again.

Taking the magma channel right to the edge of the map, smoothing and then cutting a fortification will keep the magma flowing continually off the map.
