Getting rid of rotten corpses
« on: March 13, 2013, 06:40:50 pm »

I have a bunch of rotting corpses, from dead guard dogs, invaders and other animals, filling up 250 tiles of stockpile space. Most are obviously partially decayed or just skeletons. How do I turn these into bones? When I order my butcher to "butcher a dead animal", the job is cancelled because it needs a nearby unrotten butcherable corpse. Well, what about the rotten ones?

"Butcher dead animal" refers to a fresh kill, and is automatic by default.
The corpses will rot to skeletons, and after five to ten years they will become piles of bones.  Severed parts rot down faster than complete corpses.
I usually make a BIG one away from my fort and a small one close by.  When the small one is full, I remove it so the dwarfs move everything to the larger one while it's safe (increasing the size when needed) and then re-create the small one when they're done.

You can build a raising Bridge and link it with a lever. Use the lever to raise the Bridge, then the spot, where the Bridge will fall, will be smashed by the Bridge when you lower it down. It can destroy just about anything.

As to how to get the items in the smashing zone, first you can of course relocate your Stockpile down there and do it in batches (and maybe have a really large Bridge), but the better way is to use Dumping from the Activity Zone menu. With Dumping, the Bridge doesn't have to be larger than 1x2, since with Dumping you can haul many items onto a single tile with precision and smash them all at once. You can find out more about the Dumping option from the Wiki.

If the goal is to get bones, you can create a garbage dump and dump everything into it.

Miasma will not escape out of a diagonal path.  So  you can build two diagonally adjacent walls in any corner, and designate the tile inside as a garbage dump, and then set your (o)rders to dump all corpses.

You won't lose the bones, they'll still be there, you just won't need a massive stock pile for them.  After everything is dumped, if you ever need bones for whatever reason, just unforbid them and the dwarves will pull them as needed out of the garbage dump.

If you want it extra nice, put a pet-proof door on it to prevent the flies and vermin from escaping.  If you need a diagram, let me know, and I'll post one.

if the animals were killed during the invasion, there is a good chance they are invalid for butchering. Tame animals that died from anything can't be processed, they need to be brought to the butcher alive (as opposed to wild animals)

Minecarts are an excellent dumping mechanism, since it will guarantee no dorf is under the smasher when the time comes to pull the lever.

i dont like smashing corpses, they could be useful one day, as they eventually turn into bones, i prefer to quantum stockpile them.
just dig a little hole, designate it as a garbage dump, and then set the corpses to dumping, then one day you will have resources, and in the meantime, you do NOT have a massive cluttered refuse pile

i personally like a tiny corner of my embark to be a reanimation biome, then i can dump corpses over there, have my soldiers fight the corpses, that way the soldiers train, and dismember the corpses further, turning some part of them into bones right away

By the way, concerning dumping.

I dumped some singular bolts because I wanted to clear them off my lands. Thats ok.... I guess?

However! , since the dump zone works by dumping items a Z-level below in my dump zones case, there was a problem VERY soon after.
I went to the Status Screen to assign forbidden bolts to be unforbidden and dumped. Only I didn't realize, these were the same bolts that had already been dumped for the most part.

What happens?
-> Dorfs make a friggin long line since there are like a hundred bolts, and the line is so big that by the time the first dumpers are dropping the bolts AGAIN, the middle of the line is picking up bolts or moving close by the dump.

This systematically spammed by reports with combat, of dorfs being hit by flying objects. I think about 10-15 got wounded and about 5 died, and my mostly happy population went into a tantrum spiral.

Lmao, one Z-level drop of oaken and cedar bolts is deadly guys! :D :D

EDIT:

Looks like some of them tripped over by the first bolt, then went unconcious on the dump tile. Got hit by loads more. Oh Dorfs!

Designate a useless migranto be a miner.
Dig down to Magma.
Designate shaft for a dumping zone.
Tell dorfs to dump the bodies.
Bodies are annihilated in magma.

yeah, the 1z dumping pit can be surprisingly dangerous.. seeds usually injure or kill cats
it's easy enough to manage though, just always do dumping OR recovery, never both at once :)
