rediculously complex (to idiots like me) game =)
Idiot nothing, this is generally considered one of the most (if not THE most) difficult games to learn.
The design I posted above needs the wheel, two gear assemblies and either two or three logs (from memory). It can power at least two pumps, if not all three.
A 3 length horizontal axle can be built with one log as long as you build the whole thing in one build order (after selecting horizontal axle, hit 'k' twice to make it 3 tiles wide, or if it was changed to a North/South axle, hit 'u' twice).  Also, if my in-my-head calculation is correct, it will power all three pumps, with energy to spare.

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

Thanks, EvbilBob22. I couldn't remember if it was two or three tiles per log for an axle.

Doesn't quite have the ring of heroics to it...

After a disaster with water pressure filled my UPPER levels with water, I started a new fort and built a working fountain (jet of upward flowing water into the sky at ground level in a fancy basin to catch and recycle the water) as a memorial to those who died in the tragic water cannon accident.

It would be hilarious if the guys who were shot out into the air from the failed for somehow landed outside of the embark zone, across the world, and i made the memorial fort right in the same spot. XD

if you have any wind, i think the easiest thing would be to simply build some windmills
windmills produce 0, 20 or 40 power no matter where they're placed, you just need to not build anything over the center of the 3x3 windmill.
you only need 10 power for a pump, so one windmill/pump should be plenty. all you need is access to the level above the screw pump and a 3x3 spot centered over the pump to build it.
want an off switch? build some gears until the thing stops working, then attach one to a lever and disengage the gear to turn the pump on!

of course if you're unfortunate enough to have 0 wind, you'll need the waterwheel or dorfpower :/

oh yeah, also iirc the axels are best built using 2 wood per 7 sections (unless of course, you need less than 7 sections)
