Coincidence that I just decided to check GoG if anything was new before heading to bed. Saw it and remembered this thread =p

Looking at those boxes and the game art on GOG... the version I had was settlers 2. I remember loving it as a kid, but a few years ago I tried to play it again and couldn't function with how glacially slow it was. Sort of a shame, to be spoiled by the modern age and all.

I think 2 was much more of a colony builder instead of what we'd call an RTS today.

... I tried to play it again and couldn't function with how glacially slow it was. ...

GOG versions of older games usually have a DOSbox wrapper to make them function on modern OS/hardware, and there's a setting for altering the emulated CPU speed in the config file.  It's a .conf file, and includes verbose comments so you don't have to look up settings on the web.

The only caveat is that jacking up the speed may also render it unplayable, depending on how the game was coded.  Early era DOS games often made sweeping assumptions about runtime speed, and would move at 3x or more on hardware faster than its target.  (this is a big chunk of why DOSbox has the speed emulation setting at all)

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I meant how slow the gameplay itself is. Need stone on the front lines, but the quarry is on your other border? Wait as every runner in your supply chain drags that stone from flag to flag to flag to flag to flag...
