Good Animated Shorts
« on: August 15, 2013, 10:48:47 am »

I just watched The Mysterious Geographic Explorations of Jasper Morello and really liked it. What other good animated shorts (or even non-animated ones) do you know of?

Have some classics:

Somewhere in Dreamland.
Christmas Comes but Once a Year.
Susie the Blue Coupe.

For a more recent short, and based on what you linked up there, I think you'll like this:
The Backwater Gospel.

But the optimist sees injustice as something discordant and unexpected, and it stings him into action.

I rather enjoyed The Backwater Gospel. It was really well animated and had an interesting concept.

Classic or obscure? Are those mutually exclusive? I mean, classic tends to mean it was and is still fairly well known.

Not that I don't remember (fondly, even), but it's not like bugs bunny. Kids these days couldn't even begin to identify anything else from that era. I suspect a lot of the older folk wouldn't either. But maybe I'm getting off on a tangent.

I do have another really obscure one to add to the list. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OGh97__-uLA

No, they are not.

Also "obscure" in this case is relative. Everything I linked was and is well-regarded; Susie inspired the character designs for Pixar's Cars, if you didn't notice the resemblance.

Most people haven't seen them, of course, but if they had, it wouldn't be worth linking them here (as they'd already seen them).

Liquid Television had a good number of interesting shorts (and a lot of crap, but that aside...).

Series:
-The original Aeon Flux  (before it was spun off into its own series)
-Anything by Bill Plympton
-Stick Figure Theatre (Hindenburg one was my favorite >_>)
-Crazy Daisy Ed

Shorts:
-The Killing of an Egg
-The Running Man (by Yoshiaki Kawajiri) (part of Neo Tokyo)
-Technological Threat

My significant other has high praise for Exposure, but I don't think I've seen it.  (If anyone knows how to buy/watch/etc this series, let me know.  We've been trying to find it for a while.)

(Side note: I forgot that Beavis and Butt-head got their start on Liquid Television.  Huh.)

Another one I can recall is good, if slightly pretentious and depressing (also NSFW).

Alfred's Playhouse Part 1
Part 2
Part 3

edit: Dumb Ways to Die. I haven't decided weather I am more amused or terrified. They just keep smiling!!! And that damn smooth, haunting beat doesn't help. Oh, and it's catchy as hell.
