Is this a good smartphone?
« on: March 02, 2013, 05:24:58 pm »

This one, specifically. I've been looking to get a smartphone for a while now, and this one looks like it's about within my price range.

I don't really mind if it's a bit slow, I've had cheap computers all my life and I'm well accustomed to lag. If it can't even handle Angry Birds though (and some cheap knockoff devices can't as my sister once found out), then we have a problem. I've used my sister's smartphone (the LG Optimus Zip) and the touchscreen is really nice, but since I'm looking at the cheaper model I don't know if that one will be quite as good.

Any thoughts on this phone? Weird little quirks particular to this model, limitations, things that don't work well?

IMO, too low end to be worth getting, unless you want to get it for whatsapp and text based games (probably won't smoothly run 80% of indie games either). Looks like one of the best for the price range, though.

If you're thinking of doing any kind of gaming, I'd suggest a Nexus or Samsung Galaxy S2 at the minimum (or even a Galaxy S, but I don't think they sell those anymore).

If I were you I'd aim as high-end as I could reasonably get.  Buying one piece of high quality, versatile and expensive hardware once can be financially intimidating, but buying something moderately expensive that obsoletes or breaks and needs frequent replacement can wind up costing more.

I got a Razr Maxx HD as my first smartphone. The price nearly brought a tear to my eye, but I'm confident that with creative software selection (and rooting) I can get at least five years of use out of this phone, ten if I don't physically destroy it with being strong and clumsy (which seems unlikely, a co-worker ran over his with a car and it still works fine).  I could have picked something up for about a third of the price, but I'd probably wind up replacing it every couple of years, and eventually break even, and then be effectively losing money after that.  In the meantime, I'd also be stuck with a phone that does less of what I want it to do.
