As we welcome Pope Francis, perhaps we should reflect on Popes in general throughout history. Many of these Popes were fascinating characters from Pope Alexander VI who allegedly held “worst orgy ever in the Vatican” to Pope Pius IX who was apparently tied in some way to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

My personal favourite is Pope Innocent XII, the last Pope to have a beard.

Pope Slyvester II.  AFAIK the only time in history when the pope was one of the greatest contemporary scholars of the Catholic world.  Imagine if we'd kept with that tradition.

That one that admitted that the church had made a lot of past mistakes, told people that the clergy wasn't infallible, and supported minority groups while stripping down the Vaticans insane levels of wealth to support developing nations.

Don't forget that there's more than one pope at any given time.
There's Pope Theodoros II, Pope of Alexandria and Patriarch of all Africa,
and Pope Theodore II, Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria and All Africa.

There's also a Black Pope, who isn't black.
