He won't go mad, but if he does you can say that your fortress makes demons go crazy.  8)

Hidden beneath rusting weapons was a mass of assorted bones. An elf, a goblin, even an ogre. All just waiting for someone to walk by and notice them, like some kind of land mine of horror.

I'd reckon it'd be horribly mutilated.

If you keep a diplomat in captivity by not allowing him to move, the diplomat will just be 'visiting' and waiting to meet with your leader. His civ will not be angry at you and you can keep him there as long as you wish. Killing him, on the other hand...

If you prevent the diplomat from starting the meeting, this will block all following diplomats - they'll patiently wait for the first in line to finish business before approaching your noble. If you stop them from leaving, hm, i dunno? Merchants' yaks and donkeys can become melancholic when prevented from leaving, so maybe demons can, too.

A diplomat dying on your site (regardless of what the indicated cause of death was) will strain relationships with the civilisation, but if the traders like you because caravans regularly leave intact and with nice profits, chances are pretty good that they'll just shrug it off.
