Careful with magma in reanimating biomes.  I've never experienced it myself, but I've heard that magma will melt the un-animated bodies, and turn zombies into (the more fun) !!zombies!!

I will run the experiment to completion anyway, however. Even if the only reason why there is a punctured equilibrium in the fortress is because I have been brutally butchering babies
EDIT: I just remembered that dwarves can't equip halberds. That might explain why the squads that use them always die.

Yup. Magma will get rid of corpses(item) not corpses(enemy). I put a repeating spike trap in the magma pit to convert the 2nd into the 1st. The real pain is dwarven zombies, since they can't be dumped/pitted/etc.

And if you are willing to use the coin exploit try looking at melting other items.  Some weapons or trap components can return far more than coins do.  About the only thing coin melting is good for is making more candy.
Nothing beats coins, done perfectly you get 50 bars back for an investment of one.

Coins only return 110% axes and axeblade/corkscrew/spike trap parts return 150%, however coins don't have quality.
I've got no idea how it works for candy.
