Legit links
« on: February 14, 2013, 09:45:25 pm »

The internet has several nice, free programs. Sadly, it has several programs pretending to be these programs; they are virus programs.... :(.

I tried to download speedfan from a fairly legit looking site, except of course.....

Is there any site that basically has a well known listing of legitimate links to well known programs like speedfan (where you manually control you laptop fan's speed)? If not, I'd be tempted to start one, if not for the obvious trap that may create....

Ideas?

CNET is basically that. Look, they even have the program you want!

Although, probably in this case getting it directly from the developer is probably better.

Watch out though, even many of the "legit" sites have banner ads with huge download buttons.  Double check before you click.

Yeah, those are pesky. Get adblock if you can.

hum, thanks, though it appears that program may come with undesirable spyware. does anyone know of any other programs that let you manually turn on your laptop fan?

Edit: The only thing I do not like about the download sites for speedfan is that they seem to come with spyware. There is a terrible little toolbar program called "whitesmoke" bundled in there with speedfan. The terms of service pretty much expressly tell you they are collecting personal information on you. Moreover, they say it is personally identifiable.... That, plus it being a toolbar makes me immediately suspicious. Am I overreacting to this or missing an obvious solution here?

http://forums.cnet.com/7723-6132_102-122240/do-not-download-from-a-speedfan-link/

I guess in a nutshell, my problem is, I want speedfan or some other way to control my laptop temp via a program like it without all the bundled spyware.

Ok, I figured out the downloading part.

Basically there are large "download" buttons on the site. Do NOT click these. They are spyware.
Instead, click on the much smaller and less noticeable "download" option in the menu bar. This is somewhat vile on somebody's part....

Do not download anything having to do with "whitesmoke" or any other toolbar. Not part of the program.... Only thing you want is speedfan.exe. Don't install anything else.

Now I just have to figure out how to get it to detect my laptop fan(s), which given the thing is only about a year old, shouldn't be an ordeal, but which will be an ordeal. :)

Has anyone else not had speedfan detect their fans?

Speedfan seems to have saved my laptop. I wish I would've known about it sooner. My last laptop overheated itself to death.

I know it's not really what you're looking for, but have you tried some sort of cooling device? You get additional fans to help cool your system, and no worries about spyware or pesky download ads!

At least for Speedfan, check the URL of the link you're clicking on. It should end with speedfan###.exe (currently speedfan447.) It should also be in the Almico domain. And like the others, I can't recommend adblock plugins enough. The Internet gets at least 20 times better when it isn't plastered with FREE VIRUS SCAN (read: 'free virus'. Scan not actually included.)

Have you cleaned your laptop out recently? A lot of my heating problems I find can be solved with the simple application of compressed air (make sure you open up your laptop and blow the dust out of the laptop though. All blowing it in the vents will do is make your problem worse).
