I'm not sure if it's the reason Goatmaan thinks of, but there's the quantum dodge bug that sometimes causes dodgers to end up on the other side of the wall. I haven't heard of a case where that happens with double thick walls, though.

I just had a random thought about heat in game.
Personally ive never dealt with it much.

But heat transfer. Does it transfer through different materials at different rates?
Example, a copper wall would transfer heat to the other side at a much higher rate than say, a gypsum wall.
And can it travel through air? Is building an aorgap between a couple walls enough to stop heat? And can you heat water to the point it changes into steam?

Dum thoughts perhaps... but could i capture a dragon and use it as the heat source to a steam generator (rped ofcourse. Though if steam could rise with pressure and fall back down as water... a dragon based water pumping system comes to mind)

Not sure if it happens will items, but it's very unlikely it happens with constructions.

Heat doesn't really travel that far due to FPS reasons. It's not going to make it to the other wall regardless unless there's something flammable there.

Yes. Try throwing something really hot into it, like burning lignite or graphite in a fire-proof bin, or a magma man. Dragonfire doesn't work because it doesn't itself have a temperature and doesn't ignite water. You could burn something with dragonfire, but it probably won't last very long.

Are the mechanisms heat proof?

Also I'm having trouble reading your diagram on account of being dumb. How tall is your wall? Fire breath can sometimes travel upwards a bit and make it over a 1z wall.

The intended reason was probably the directionality of engraving--that is, an engraving only provides a value boost to the side the engraver stood on while engraving. Making walls two tiles thick allows you to engrave both sides, for more equal value boost.

While there is a reported "quantum dodge bug", the more familiar case involves charge attacks and tumbling (which is why teleportation tends to happen in pairs). I have observed dwarves tumble through double-thick walls, though not triple-thick (yet).

what? Engravings are directional?

And as for the fire: Heat spreads through the wall, items reach their ignition point. they burn.

Yes, engravings are directional, although I doubt that's what Goatmaan thought of, as you can't engrave built walls. Interesting there's a confirmed sighting of a double tunneling, though.

As for the mechanisms, they're probably magma safe, as most of them are gabbro, but it doesn't matter to a raised bridge, since raised bridges are as invulnerable as walls (lowered is another case, and I've considered exploiting that to use bridges to keep magma at bay when filling a very long moat to combat evaporation: the moat would be filled one section at a time, then the bridge is lowered and dissolved).

My wall is a single tile high, with an Up stair above the bridges. Above the space the FB is kept in is another wall, ensuring trees can not grow below and foul things up. Thus, there's no logically legal path out from the enclosed space (not counting the exit from the cavern to the external world).

Sorry for the confusion.
My rooms are dug out with 2x thick walls, for engraving purposes.
2x thick walls, natural or built, were thought to stop dodging thru a wall.
And now possibly may stop certain fires. Though maybe not.
