7DRL Challenge 2015
« on: March 06, 2015, 03:31:24 pm »

So, it's that time of year again. Yep, the 7DRL is on! If you don't know what this is then this is a helpful description from the 7DRL Challenges website:

Quote
A Seven-Day Roguelike (7DRL) is a roguelike created in seven days. That is, the author stopped writing code 168 hours after they started writing code. A 7DRL can be created at any time during the year. However, general agreement was reached that it would be fun to schedule a specific week for a 7DRL Challenge.

What is a roguelike game? The genre began with the game Rogue, which was created in the 1980s. According to Wikipedia, roguelikes are a sub-genre of role-playing video games, characterised by:

randomisation (for replayability),
permanent death (once a player-character dies, the game cannot be restored at an earlier point), and
turn-based movement
– although, of course, there are exceptions to each of these principles in various roguelikes.

For historical and practical reasons, most roguelikes depict the game world using ASCII “graphics,” although some newer roguelikes use graphical tiles. Roguelikes typically involve dungeon crawls, with many monsters, items, and environmental features. Brogue is a good example of a contemporary roguelike.

So, are any of you guys going to join? Are you going to judge? Or are you just going to play some of the games?

It`s all over and the dust is slowly settling on the battlefield - congratulations to those who managed to complete their entries and also to those who did not. I played quite a few so far and must say that over quality level regarding gameplay is very high - followed by some awesome gfx/fx too (though I`ll always prefer good old ASCII) .

Few personal highlights:

Rogue Sector - sci-fi dogfights and mad manouvers in a hex based 2D space - simple but addictive. Added bonus of nostalgia for old board games and SSI classics nicely ticked.

Hurt Yoghurt - Does what it says on the tin - a puzzle-like where you battle the evergrowing goo whilst trying to salvage some relics. Weird and wonderful, with superb soundtrack.

RogueAI - first you code some logic for your monsters then watch them duke it out to see which AI is the best. Another classic from Numeron Reactor labs.

Warden`s Duty - Kinda static and deceptively simple but pretty cool too. Reminds me of old classic West Bank/Bank Panic in 7DRL guise.

Stygian Abyss - TOO CUTE! Yes, it`s Ultima Underworld getting 7DRL makeover, playable in your browser. Wow! :)

Also Dumuzid, Xenowars, Synthesizer, Firetail, Rogue Space Marine and heaps more at 7DRL blog and Roguetemple forums...check`em out!

Yep, there have been some really cool entries this year! So far, I've played Rogue Sector, Outlaw Space and Die Rogue. Die Rogue can be found here and you should all play it because it is really cool!

knowing stat effects in advance ruins some of the surprises (like magic pools.)
As an aside: I can't believe someone would call their game "West Bank" (I mean, assuming it's not a shitty game-for-change actually about Palestine)

I tried to play chess but two of my opponents were playing competitive checkers as a third person walked in with Game of Thrones in hand confused cause they thought this was the book club.

West Bank =/= Gaza Strip. Maybe it was more obvious 30 years ago ("old classic") that these are just two words that can have lots of connotations, and applied to videogames probably mean some cowboys vs bandits action.
