LP: RTW XC - I - A Syracusian in India
« on: February 08, 2013, 08:31:27 pm »

This will be a let's play of Rome: Total war under the extended cultures mod. I will be imposing a lot of restrictions on myself. The restrictions are:

-I will start on the Syracuse campaign.
-I may never produce military units, with the exception of ships (for transport purposes, avoiding battles with them) and local governors (which may never leave the city they are recruited in). All starting military units are disbanded.
-The only family members that are allowed to leave Syracuse are Hiero and his children.
-At no point may I end a turn with projected funds for the next turn negative.
-All those who wish to marry into the family must be Syracusian.
-Hiero must leave Syracuse, travel to Patala (The south-easternmost city on the map), and capture it before capturing any other cities
-Once Patala is captured, Hiero and his children may continue capturing cities with mercenary armies
-All cities must be occupied, and kept at low taxes. Enslaving or exterminating cities is not permitted.
-I will not trade away or accept map information.

The walls of Syracuse and the workshop alone will allow your hoplites to laugh at Punics for years to come.

While i disagree with the restrictions, as they make the campaign longer, not harder, i am happy to see some Rome over here.
You will get sick of the battles before it's over, and with mercenaries being the only poll, you can not afford to auto-resolve them. I hope you thought it through, because any campaign that is focused on helping the AI - which does need help - will get to that empty deadzone of endless enemy stacks of 0 value, that do nothing but take your time.

I do like the no-negative solution to the fast Syracuse powerplay, but since you disband armies, it's moot.

Are you going to horde Syracuse up, or keep the settlement?

The fact that I am reliant on mercenaries I hope will add some difficulty elements, due to the slow respawn rate. Additionally, if the AI recruits them before I do, I'll be doubly screwed. I may also impose an additional restriction of only accepting adoptions/man of the hours if they are Syracusian, or maybe even not at all, meaning that the number of people who can recruit mercenaries would be limited to the number of family members in the east (one currently, and a second one coming in a dozen or so turns). The quality of mercenary troops also tends to be lower on average than faction troops, so smart tactics will have to be used.

I'm going to try and hold Syracuse for as long as possible, but if it falls then I'm going to carry on with the conquests in the east anyway.

I suspect that the major difficulty in the first few turns will be building up a significant army without letting my money go negative. With the siege on, I'm currently looking at a profit of around 900 denarii a turn, which will rise to about 1500 without the siege. After I capture a few settlements, it'll be a matter of avoiding enemy armies from slipping through my lines. As my front increases in size, having enough generals to be able to recruit enough mercenaries to replace the dead will be the issue. I probably won't be rushing after the first few turns, as my armies will be smaller than what the AI can field, and therefore I'll have to rely on cities and fortifications to even the odds.

I made an error in the first few turns, and I've had to restart the LP (The first decade or two have no flexibility in how to proceed). I will post the new start soon.
