We have a scanner mouse. It's old, and it could do with being replaced.

So, we tried replacing it. We got a wireless mouse, first. The software refused to install properly for no particular reason, and so it didn't work. We then tried a ball mouse with a cable. Same problem, the software decided to tell us to fuck ourselves. So, we try another, different scan mouse. That one had the same problem.
This means we're only able to use the old mouse, because the other mice just don't work. I've plugged the scan mouse in again, just to see whether it would work. The light at the bottom has come on, but left and right click aren't working, and it isn't moving the arrow on the screen. The computer tried installing the software, but apparently got an error 'possibly because the software was made to operate on windows 95 or later' (I'm using Vista, right now).
I'm presently clueless as to what to do, and any help would be appreciated.

EDIT: for the mouse I just plugged in, the site says it needs no drivers.
