It's alot of fun to optimize every mercenary's loadout since the game makes it so that the character skills and stats compliment your choices. I used to think that if a mercenary's marksmanship was really high it would make him a sniper... oh how wrong I was.

Also while making my team as balanced as possible I still have to deal with the personalities of the mercenaries. I'm not saying I have a problem with a mercenary disliking the other. What I'm saying is that some of them annoy me with their voices or the things they say.
A good example of this is Ira with her shouting 'Flipping A' way too often. Also many of the IMP voices sound really dumb.

I prefer calm and cool characters like Magic.

Better mercs help though once you start facing Elites, Cats or worse...

Good gear can be useful, instead of spending lots of money on good merc's at the start you can get a few cheap ones with the horrible gear and go to San Mona to upgrade with any cash saved, Tony usually has a nice selection of toys and San Mona is safe to enter.

I find that you need a mix of ok mercs, average weapons and a little luck.

You need mercs that can hit what there aiming at, guns that have the range and fire rate to march your opponents and a plan to use them both.

a little luck.
+1
There has been way too many times I shot a guy in the face with a sawed-off shotgun from only like one or two tiles away and missed. Actually missing isn't that common but a black shirt enduring the shot with like 50 damage is way too common. The only thing you can hope for in that situation is him wasting the rest of his AP for something else than shooting back.

The ranging in JA 2 always make me want to make weapon range to visual scale mod.
The weapon ranges  are 10meter per tile but the scale is more like 2 per tile.

Yeah it's a bit silly, seems closer to 1 meter per tile though as they take like 2 tiles space when going prone.

Just want to say that throwing is op. Hired Blood with shurikens and from 20 tiles he can score head-shots very easily while pistols have range of 11/10 usually and even then can have a hard time of hitting. I'm pretty much just trying out an insane run with Blood using throwing to kill enemies while I have Buzz and Lucky using auto-weapons to keep enemies suppressed.

Is it just me or do grenades just not do much damage at all?

Even early on with enemies wearing little to no armor the MK2 (Biggest grenade I can find that's not launched) doesn't kill them and they just get up on the next turn.

AND GODDAMNIT WHEN I DROP A $2,000 THERMOBARIC GRENADE AT YOUR FEET I EXPECT YOU TO DIE, NONE OF THIS "BUT I'M WEARING ARMOR" BULLSHIT.

Just do what I do, and up the damage values in the INI files. That tends to make things a lot more lethal.

If you play with AP inventory manipulation turned on, then I find it's a lot more effective to just use your gun. Grenades are one of those weapons where they're not very useful unless you're in a certain situation, but you'll sure as heck wish you had one when that situation comes up.

Yeah the damage grenades are pretty poor, handy to just stop enemy doing anything next turn, mustard gas, tear gas and stun grenades are pretty good though and can incapacitate enemies pretty quickly, even though they are banned by geneva convention, along with hollow-points, but then again mercs are banned as well so screw geneva!

Throwing is working pretty well, but insane is insane and trying to deal with sniper elites ambushing you before your first city is pretty hard.... need to try again with a merc who has hunter/ranger to stop ambushes and can take safe routes.

EDIT:

Is also on https://www.humblebundle.com/weekly so if you want to get it you can get it super cheap, or donate to charity as well, its tempting even for me and I already have the games :D
