Help me get deserving Indie Games distribution.
« on: February 07, 2013, 02:05:02 pm »

Hey guys, I've been asked SO many times to do this by bay12 members that I feel compelled to do so.

Now first and foremost, if ANY of this seems illegitimate in ANY way come out and tell me and I'll stop it, post-haste. Keep in mind that I help devs get distribution for a LIVING (I work as GamersGate's Content Manager.), and spend hours every day looking over many titles.

I want this post to serve as a central hub for my friends here at bay12 to post links to games THEY feel should be on GamersGate.

ONCE AGAIN I MUST STRESS I MAKE NO MONEY FOR DOING THIS, I do this to help developers by streamlining the entire "get onto GamersGate" bit, by having you refer games to me. I have been a member of the community for years now, and have learned to trust and value your judgment.

One last disclaimer, for any naysayers out there. By doing this you aren't doing my job, helping me do it, or easing workload. This isn't one of those "Oh let's have the community do the work for me" shindigs that people sometimes do. In all likelyhood any games you refer are already on my hit-list, but I want to give back to this community and take your feedback to heart while doing it!

With all this having been said, if anyone knows of any Indie games that are AT LEAST in a playable state, that are looking to sell their game, please let me know what game it is, with a url and a short blurb preferrably.

If it's a good match for our service, I'll make sure to let the Developer know exactly who showed me the game, and thank you guys appropriately.

*Once again, I'm doing this out of the sheer volume of people asking me to do so, I am doing this to help, not to generate publicity for my site or anything.

EDIT* Following is a current and up to date list of games Bay 12 members refered to me that I have gotten onto GamersGate

Hell, if you haven't tried getting a hold of 'im already, you might try hitting DarkGod up. He's recently shifted Tales of Maj'Eyal onto Desura and might be interested in spread it further.

Not really sure if "sell", per se, is the right word, though. The game is free and largely open source, but what DG's been doing is letting folks buy through other services (Desura, so far, but a greenlight is being attempted as well) and having that count as a donation (which opens up donator status, which is mostly cosmetic things with a bit of early access on the side). Fair caveat that I have no real idea what Gamersgate is or if DG'd be interested, or if there'd be some kind of conflict of interest with him aiming for multiple sell points. But it might not hurt to pass a message along.

As for the game itself, it's basically a modernized roguelike. Graphical options, fairly slick UI, lots of ease of use features, unlocking system and achievements, plus in-game chat integration and other such shenanigans, and a quite deep and involved combat system and generally well written lore. It's definitely one of my overall favorite games.

I'll take a peek now, much obliged friend! Want me to give your name directly to the dev or your bay12 handle? If it's your name just PM it to me along with an e-mail so as not to give away sensitive info on the forum!

OHHH it's TOME, played the heck out of this! I'll have to speak with him about how he would market it, but rest assured I'll ask ok? I don't actually think he'll be up for it though, but I promise to try!

Wait is this the same TOME that I've played before? It's acronym is the same but it seems like a different game from Tales Of Middle Earth, weird? In either case, spoken with him, see these things fly under my radar as they have similar names and appearance/playstyles. MUCH obliged friend!

Nah, you can just use Frumple if you intend to mention me, I use the same moniker over on T4's forum. And yeah, Tales of Maj'Eyal is the latest incarnation of ToME, having discarded the Tolkien background for an original setting. It's pretty different from the old Angband variant it started as, heh.

Great to hear! I like it! When I saw the trailer I didn't even make the association! Seems awesome enough to warrant an international release, so yeah I sent him a mail!

See this is precisely what I meant guys! I saw this game a month ago and didn't give it the proper time due to not realizing WHAT it was. I didn't know it was the new tome!

Sadly I don't really have much contact with indie developers.  I just love playing their games.   :P

A couple games I'm interested in that aren't on gamersgate yet though are:

Incredipede:  Coming to Steam soon, but I don't see why they wouldn't want to go on GG as well.

Platformines:   I don't think they are quite done with it yet, but I think they have a demo.

Also, two indie games I actually really enjoyed but don't seem to be on gamers gate are Adventures of Shuggy and Gateways from Smudged Cat games..  They are both short puzzle platformers which are a dime a dozen these days, but they were probably the most innovative puzzle platformers I've played in quite a while.

This is dedicated to FRUMPLE, thank you so very much for letting me know about TOME!

Hi Alexander; yeah I know Frumple he is an active member of the
community :)

> I heard you are now distributing your game via Desura and might be
> considering selling the game soon. If so please let me know if you
> are interested in using our distribution service.

Yes absolutely; the game is already being sold on Desura so yes :)
How it works is that even though the game is basically free, donators
(or buyers in desura's case, and yours) get some extra features (a new
class, infinite lives mode, special tiles, ...).

The game sells at around 9€ or somewhat more, what is your revenue
sharing method ? and what is required of the game to be made available
on your site?

Thanks

Indie games that are at least in a playable state?

Kenshi. Sometimes compared to Mount & Blade, it's an open world sandbox game (presumably set in a post-apocalyptic world?) with steampunk samurais and ninjas and harpoon turrets and cybernetics and such. Most of that stuff isn't implemented yet, and the game is pretty early in development, but it's still technically playable.
Running With Rifles is an isometric/top-down shooter akin to Cannon Fodder. It supports multiplayer, and each map is large enough to support many bases to capture. Still pretty early in development but it's very functional.
Maaaybe Kerbal Space Program? That's a more successful one. KSP is a space program simulator. In its current form it is simply a sandbox which includes several celestial bodies to visit and explore, and infinite funds to construct your space ship/space exploder however you please. It's a simulation, but liberties have been taken for the sake of fun.

I've never used Gamersgate before but I hope that helps

Kenshi I signed onto GamersGate in January 2012, last year.

RWR was being looked at but the dev decided not to for undisclosed reasons.

Kerbal I believe, only sells through their web, but let me ask!

Thanks!

Response on INCREDIPEDE

Alexander,

Thanks for getting in touch and glad you like our game! We're in the process of writing a big update to Incredipede - version 1.5. When that's ready we should talk about getting it on GamersGate. Should be around mid-March (when Incredipede's also nominated for an IGF award!). We'll ping you then and see what needs doing.

Cheers,

- Sarah
