A chieftess whose own worst enemy is themselves?
« on: July 22, 2012, 10:04:18 pm »

So I was playing as a necro, going through the woods, etc...

When suddenly, I was ambushed by bandits. I thought, "no problem, my undead minions will dispatch them."

And then I talked to the chieftess, who said this:

...What?

So, I checked legends, and found... nothing. She had a fairly uneventful life, with no kills before I showed up. She started as a regular old farmer, but then, after 3 years, moved to a town called Flaretail, got married, and became a cheesemaker. Then, 5 years after that, she stopped making cheese for some reason, and became a bandit. Then, 27 years later, I came along.

Her husband, Loli Russetknits, was attacked at the age of 2 by Ulum Leagueboy the Bite of Basins, and actually managed to fend her off, though she escaped without injury. 3 years later, the same thing happened, with similar results. 7 years later, at the age of 15, he got married to Kastrol, and became a blacksmith.

As an interesting aside, Ulum has actually racked up a significant kill list, with nine notable human kills and 92 others. Her life mostly consisted of violence and killing, but she apparently started out as a lady, and stayed as one for 8 years. Then she became a were-lizard, and, one year later, fled her home and became an enemy of pretty much everyone.

In any case, does anyone have ideas on what the heck's going on? I can see no reason for Kastrol to say what she did, considering she's apparently never been in a fight in her life, much less kill someone with the exact same name as her (who, according to legends, doesn't exist).

Perhaps it's symbolical?
Choosing the life of banditry could mean sacrificing a part of oneself?
Maybe she resents who she once was?
And/or maybe, she's a vampire! :O

Maybe she fought for the name, killing the previous bearers.

I'd wager they were a vampire, as Ultimuh suggested.

Vampires will take fake identities I know, and spend part of their time as bandits. Maybe the woman you encountered is a vamprie who took Kastrol's name, and killed her.

I'm not sure whether vampires actually take names from other historical figures, though...

now, as we all know, the tribes of dwarf fortress were extremely philosophical for their time, resulting phrases such as the ones we see here today. if this chieftess had not been met, she would have gone home to cut herself and laugh joyfully, for as we all know, losing is FUN!

Only one way to settle this: drink her blood.

Or abandon the necro'd thread. :p

So to recap, one minute everything was going just great, and the next we have caverns collapsing, firebreathing cave beasts, underground brush fires, a screaming swarm of poltergheists back for revenge, zombies in the corridors, drunken brawls in the dining halls, magma pouring into the caverns, rotting miasma everywhere, insanity, madness, and a flying crocodile heading right towards us!
