I certainly haven't heard anything about it recently... :(

Hey All,

I'm reviving this thread from the dead to let you know that Spocean's alive and is now running on Unity.

Our kickstarter failed, and I'm the only developer left on the project now, but I'll keep putting out free releases for the foreseeable future. I was the artist on the udk version, but I've been teaching myself how to program so that I can keep it alive.  So far, I've managed to re-write most of what we had in the udk, but it's slow going until I can get a better grip on the technology.  I just can't shake the feeling that there's intriguing core gameplay here that needs to be developed and explored at all costs.  Anyway, this version is more stable than the last one, and features 2v2 ship battles with up to 30 players at the moment.

Ooh, this is good news!

There have been a few similar'ish games recently, like Air Buccaneers and Guns of Icarus Online. However, I think what they miss is the sense of scale, and only Spocean did this a little, by havings LOTS of people on the same ship. Is this going to be the differentiating factor, or is there something else? :)

Spocean's emphasis is much more about capturing ships than the others, I think.  The victory conditions right now, for example, are to take control of every ship (they can't be destroyed).  Even the additional game modes on the drawing board all encourage or require getting into the other team's ships to some extent or another.  Instead of treating ships like mere vehicles, it embraces the concept that all the ships together make up a sort of dynamic environment that's constantly re-configuring, connecting, and disconnecting with itself.

And yeah, I'm building the code specifically to support a lot of ships/players.

I was really excited about this at one point, but that point was shortly after it all went down. Good to see this back up!
