It's simple and straightforward at first, but as time goes on it gets worse and worse.  Ermor and R'lyeh specifically are really bad.

Well, yes, you're going to have lots of armies to manage if you're playing a nation that uses lots of chaff armies to do stuff. If you don't like moving your armies around, use one of the battlemage-heavy nations and things should be much easier. EA Caelum comes to mind, as does Patala and MA Pythum. One of the keys to dominions is that many of the nations play very differently from each other, and you shouldn't play the nations that you don't like.

Yes but when you dislike them because you need to spend 8 hours for 1 turn instead of the lack of tactical oppertunities I call it a flaw in game design.

well, depends on the map. Pick one of the >300 provinces and throw in 10-15 nations. Long game guaranteed.

Ah. Well.. that's why I stick to smaller maps. Anyway, the game was published by a wargaming company, so I'd expect the massive maps to be more suited to the people who actually enjoy spending 8 hours on one turn.

I'm so glad I didn't buy it, because I'd be trying damn hard to get my money back. I can imagine a Dominions 3 that is easy to play, and a fun waste of time. But the Dominions 3 I'm forced to play is abstracted to hell and a pain to behold.

It's quite easy to get into. Certainly easier than DF. It's got a thick manual too :D Personally, I love it for its simulation potential.. though Fall From Heaven II is a better fantasy world simulation.

I am kept away by the high price.   I think IllWinter is doing themselves harm.  I would think they would sell more than twice as many copies at half the price...i could be wrong...but $56 is prohibitive to me.

While the price tag is rather high shelling out the cash does purchase some exciting gameplay.

The trick is to only spend a minimum amount of time with the single player to familiarize oneself with the basic mechanics then dive onto the forums and join a Play By Email Game.  The community is friendly and several games were starting per week when I was involved.  Its a fun pace once you get used to it, spending a little time each day tweaking your turn file and nothing beats the suspense of waiting for the triumph or heartbreak the next turn file will bring.

Bump for great justice.

I love this game, flaws aside. It's doing things with God-sims than I've always wanted to see happen (defining who you are as a god and what that means) and the unit, item and spell selection are first class.

Too bad it lacks the extra polish to make the game easier to play. I started an easy game with 5 easy AI on Garden of the Gods....pretty sure I'm going to have to abandon the game if I ever want to really fight against the AI. The amount of tedium and scanning involved in the mid to late game is kind of ridiculous.

Oh and the price tag is insane. I uh, am demoing it right now. At $25, this is a game a lot of people would try. At $55, it will forever be a niche indie game of excellent quality that half of people aren't going to try, because they can't imagine something that costs that much looks that ugly. Dominions 3 has a ton of depth...but I don't know if it's got $55 worth of depth. When the bulk of game play is just moving your units around a map, you kind of expect more bang for your buck.

I suppose this means I need to try Fall from Heaven next.

Great news! The game has finally become a lot cheaper! It's already available on Gamersgate!

I'm pretty excited, even though I already own the game.

I bought the game at the $30 price point.  I like the many choices and options.  I am in a constant state of robbing Peter to pay Paul.  No matter which choice i make the Ai punishes me for most exposed weaknesses.

I've been really getting into 4x games lately, like Eador and SMAC and everywhere I turn I read something about dominions.  I might have to check this out!

EDIT : also couldn't help but read this in farnsworth's voice

I managed to get this game at half price for $15 dollars (which I think around the time was 9ish pounds?) and I've never looked back.

Yes the games is quite flawed and frustrating but I can't find another turn based fantasy tactics game like it that I can run on my piece of crud laptop. Also I've no problem with spending that money when I've had over 50 hours of fun with it.

Now if I could actually learn the advanced concepts of this game I would have much more fun.
