Do dwarves notice decorations?
« on: February 02, 2013, 02:14:20 am »

I couldn't find this on the wiki and have no idea how to test it properly. If a dwarf has a preference for a certain material that can be used to decorate an item, will he appreciate that item more if it's been decorated with that material?

Example: Dwarf likes iron, bloodstone, wild boar hoof, armor stands, etc. If I put an iron armor stand in his room he'll probably admire it, but does this multiply if the iron armor stand is decorated with spikes of bloodstone and hanging rings of wild boar hoof? Or does this only increase the value? What about when decorations are images, such as "a large roach in green glass", does this make a dwarf that likes large roaches happy too? Also, randomly: Do dwarves respond more to statues of themselves?

It seems that if the dwarves don't notice item decoration, some of these preferences would be useless, aside from strange-mood-created furniture. Does anyone have any info/experiences they can share?

IIRC it only increases the value, though I'm not 100% on that. Dwarves don't have any modifiers related to images of themselves AFAIK.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

Well they might admire things they like.

As far as motifs of images goes, those don't seem to matter. Dwarfs never receive happy or bad thoughts quoting _images_ of creatures or persons they like or hate; they always need to witness the creature in the flesh.

Checking the interaction between preferences and decoration materials sounds like a nightmare. It's already difficult to spot the effect of _base_ materials fitting preferences: all you have to go on in the game itself are the difference (or not) between the listed value of a room in the 'R'ooms list and the rating the dwarf gives the rooms in their 'z' detailed character description.

You'd need two objects of the exact same monetary value and equally-liked base material. One of them must be decorated with a preferred material, the other with a non-preferred material. And then you must calibrate a room's value so that it's _just_ below the next quality level with one of these objects included. Exchange the two and see if it makes a difference to the dwarf's own rating.

The experiment would still be quite profitable, because you'd very likely end up with lots and lots of variously-decorated pieces of furniture, which would be quite useful to boost your fort's happiness.

Art images indeed affect value, and a dwarf that detests a type of vermin will perceive images of that vermin to be less valuable than normal; thus, if your rat-hating mayor's bedroom is covered with masterwork engravings of rats, the worst thing that will happen is that he will complain that his room is of poor quality.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
