Craft an Item To A Specific Amount
« on: February 08, 2013, 03:48:23 pm »

Been playing Gnomoria a bit lately, and I came to REALLY love the 'Craft To' option.  For those that haven't played it, 'Craft X To Y' means that production of X is ordered until there are Y of them in the stockpile.  This is extremely useful for industry chains like charcoal/iron, because if you 'craft charcoal to 2', you'll always try to keep 2 charcoal at the ready for the usage.

I imagine this being something that's only possible if your stocks are kept at the highest level of precision (kind of an advanced manager feaure), and would be accessible through the Manager interface (u>m>Q, perhaps).  This would make it very easy to equip your military with a specific kind of gear, or maintain a stockpile of training bolts without using all of your bones up, etc.

Just for your information, there's a Community developped tool (DF foreman) which does exactly what you want.

It would still be a nice addition to the manager itself - It sounds like DF Foreman (which is also the name of an abandoned Therapist-like tool) is hard to get to work right, and creating 'standing orders' or whatever could probably leverage a lot of the same mechanics of the work order system.

It's planned and has been suggested before, search, etc other mandatory notes.

DFHack has that as a plugin called "workflow" now.

Towns also has an option to set up automatic orders to keep an item in stock so you always have X amount of it, with X being however much you want.

Standing production orders are currently in the community voting thing. There's a link to it at the top of this forum. Standing production orders in DF would be outstanding. While you can use utilities for this, if it were to be included in the base game that would be even better.

There is a lot of potential for clothing items, but only if owned clothing doesn't count towards this number, otherwise it would be entirely useless for managing clothing production.

The only thing really missing on the workflow tool is an "amount left over" tool so that you don't, say, use up all your fuel smelting ore or leave yourself threadless making cloth. If that existed, workflow would be dang near perfect.

You can sort of kludge it at the moment by taking advantage of workshop clutter. The more items stored in a workshop the slower production will be. If you limit storage for things then workshops become self limiting. If the workshop gets very full its production will grind nearly to a halt. When the workshop becomes less full production will speed up again.
