Good armor setup?
« on: February 01, 2013, 10:46:25 am »

What's a good outfit for my melee squads to wear?
I've got them in the default "metal armor" uniform right now, but I want to know how to equip them for best protection/most mobility.

I, too, would like to know what people are using.  I saw a thing on the wiki once that seemed to say the optimal body armor was three mail shirts and a breastplate (per dwarf), I wonder, do any of you actually do crazy stuff like that?

1 breastplate, 3 mail shirts, 6 cloaks, 1 helm, 6 hoods, 1 greaves, 2 trousers, 1 gauntlet, 1 mitten, 1 high boot, 1 sock, 1 shield.

I use it all the time. I may cut back on hoods and cloaks once in a while though.
It's a great setup even in copper armor. It keeps them protected well, and can hold their own most of the time.

I do give them 3 mail shirts, but as of late I tend to skip the hoods and cloaks. So many degradable clothing makes them pick up equipment too often.

I don't bother with stacking mail shirts, cloaks or hoods anymore.  It's a pain to keep the worn out stuff in good shape, and the benefit of multiple mail shirts is a bit dubious compared to the extra weight slowing dwarves down.  Testing has shown that stacking does improve survivability, but at least in the current version (until the combat / move speed split in the upcoming version) the slow down from the extra gear may make matters worse.

This is the uniform I use now:

Helm
Mail Shirt
Breastplate
Gauntlets
Greaves
High Boots
Shield, if the squad has a 1 handed weapon or crossbow.

This is using the best metal I have, which I usually make sure is steel.  The shields I make out of wood or leather, since material doesn't really matter and they weigh less.

It depends on what your objective is. For simplicity's sake I usually have my main military in helm, mail shirt, breastplate, cloak, greaves, high boots, gauntlets, weapon, shield.

For other "recruits", I send them down to the caverns completely naked with a pointed stick. If they can take down a cave troll wearing just a wooden training spear and a beard, then they get to be in the real military. And it keeps the migrant population down.

Good, that's what I've been using, too.  I felt that the stacking 3 mail shirts etc was a bit exploity even if it worked.
