Oh yeah, this was the one where they froze everything, which enraged some people who used it as a cloud service, essentially. Plus everyone else, but they had an especially ironclad reason to be offended.

Quote
"Mega is going to be huge, and nothing will stop Mega — whoo!" a gleeful Dotcom bellowed from a giant stage set up in his yard, seconds before a helicopter roared overhead and faux police agents rappelled down the side of his mansion. Dotcom eventually ordered everyone to "stop this madness!" before breaking out into a dance alongside miniskirt-clad "guards" as music boomed.
Also I like this guy.

Quote
Prosecutors say Dotcom made tens of millions of dollars while filmmakers and songwriters lost around $500 million in copyright revenue.
And I lost $800 million in emotional damages.

Anyway, it's interesting that he's basically going balls-out blind-eye to piracy issues this time. The new system doesn't allow his own company to see what someone's sending/uploading, meaning they have no control or, in theory, legal responsibility over it. As the guy points out in the article, we'll see if that flies in court or not, but it is an interesting concept.

The kitchenette mold free, you move on to the pantry. it's nasty in there. The bacon is grazing on the lettuce. The ham is having an illicit affair with the prime rib, The potatoes see all, know all. A rat in boxer shorts smoking a foul smelling cigar is banging on a cabinet shouting about rent money.

I've been watching the Kim Dotcom story via TorrentFreak. While I don't approve of the man himself (he's a scam artist if ever there was one) his business position and finances mean he's a major player in the issue of internet privacy, which I support.

In terms of the Mega site, while the data is encrypted, your personal information isn't. The Privacy Policy clearly state your information will be stored and given to the authorities if they think it's necessary. This translates roughly into the following scenario:

Pirate uploads movie to Mega
Pirate posts link to movie elsewhere
Movie company finds link
Movie company alerts authorities
Authorities request user data for uploader from Mega
Mega provide IP address, registration details, etc.
Authorities use these to locate uploader

However, due to the fact the data is encrypted, Mega can't be held responsible for the information it hosts, as it can't search that information. Effectively this means Mega is protected, but not the users.

IPs still aren't people, though. YOu'd need to be the only person in a house, with your own router, and a static IP to pin down a specific person instead of 'This device, at the time, had the specified IPv4 Address.'

Registration details on the otherhand, thats thier problem.

I'd like the guy more if i got the feeling that the money went to anything worthwhile. That quote doesn't fill me with confidence.

Even if you let your IP adress everywhere, it's not enough legally to sue you (or whatever).

Kind of necessary for him to be some scum to manage in this world. It's full of scum, only way to survive.
