Training War Grizzlys
« on: January 31, 2013, 08:35:51 pm »

I have never used War Animals before, but I have a pair of grizzly bears in my current fort so I thought I'd give it a try.  I think I have everything set up correctly but no training is happening.  I don't know if I've done something wrong or if I'm just not being patient enough.  Here's the setup.

I have two dwarfs with the Animal Training labor enabled.
I have two tame grizzly bears.
I have an animal training zone and the two bears are chained in that zone.
In the stocks screen for animals I've indicated that the bears should be trained and selected the two trainers.
The trainers definitely have access to the bears.

The trainers are lounging around in their rooms with "no job".  On the jobs list there is no entry for animal training.  Am I missing something here, or do I just need to wait longer?

I've never tried to chain animals I wanted trained.  I've also never tried to assign specific trainers in the animals menu.

You actually don't need to even pen the beasts into the training area, I find it easy to train war critters just by making sure that -

I have an 'i' zone marked for training (it can serve other purposes too) (I've never tried using an area smaller than 3x3)

I have dwarves with animal training enabled

I have animals marked for training in the animals menu

Within 30 seconds or so I get notifications that the beasties are trained.

Hmmm, okay.  I have taken them off of the chains and now they are wandering around in the meeting hall.  Presumably when the time comes to train them they will be led to the training zone and trained.  I used the animal menu to change the trainer selection to "any trainer".

It's been a while though and nothing has happened yet so I must still have a problem.  According to the stocks menu I have 36 units of meat, if that's important.

The only thing I can think of if your dwaves have no job is that perhaps they have other 'labors' enabled preventing them from doing animal training.(Hauling, mining, etc...) War training doesn't require meat last I checked. Only taming animals from wild to domesticated status requires meat/food. Another thing to look at is if your grizzly bears are really domesticated or if they are just ☼Trained☼ so that are friendly. I'm not entirely whether a ☼Trained☼ vs a domesticated animal would matter, but it might be another reason if you find they aren't doing anything and the training spot is accessible.

Have you checked the animals screen? It should say WAR in its name. It literally takes no time to train an animal. I assigned mine and a few seconds later... BAM.. war animals.

nope, doesn't matter

my guess, as mentioned too, is that you set the wrong training order. They don't need to be trained, that is for taming, which isn't needed since my guess is you got them from elves (otherwise they'd never list as tame without taming cubs, but, as mentioned before as trained), but need to be war trained, done by pressing w in the animal screen iirc

Thank you Garath, I knew it had to be something simple.  I'm not in front of the game right now but I know I used t for the training order, not w.  I'll fix it tomorrow.
