Can you use minecart as mean of dwarf transportation?

I didn't really get how minecarts work - can i just load dwarf there and make him ride? Can we make elevators? Is there any kind of new break-through engineering invention that can be built using minecarts? (no computers and 101 logic)

Yes, you can have a dwarf ride a mine cart around.

I personally do not do this. I only have dwarves push mine carts, with numerous stops at maximum friction in case of elevation changes to prevent run-away carts. A guided mine cart on flat terrain is perfectly safe even in crowded areas.

A ridden or pushed mine cart can get out of control and cause all kinds of mayhem. Sometimes this is a good thing if out of control mine carts are used vs goblins or demons. But its bad if you accidentally grapeshot your dining room with dwarf giblets.
