underground tree-farming
« on: January 28, 2013, 02:20:25 pm »

So I understand the general principle of underground tree farming... irrigate the ground, penetrate a cavern, and wait.  My question:  how long do you have to wait?  How long do trees take to grow?

Follow-up question: If you breach the caverns once, then wall them off, will trees still grow in the rest of your fortress?  Or do you  need to keep the cavern open so that spores will continue to come in?

Yes to the former. As long as caverns are revealed moss and 'shrooms will grow on any dirt or mud. No physical connection required. I typically just hollow out the soil layers at the top, no irrigation needed unless you're growing on stone.

Well if COD players all have ADHD, and Minecrafters autism, then what do DF players all have?

Furthermore, plants will grow from each cavern you've discovered (so once you discover the 3rd cavern layer, your tree farm will start growing blood thorns and nether-caps along with your tower-caps/fungiwood/etc.), but plants from one cavern will never grow inside another cavern.

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.
