Army Arc and Fort Population. Hmmm.
« on: February 02, 2013, 12:56:45 pm »

If we look at "average" fort sizes, which I would assume is never higher then 500 for the most part due to fps and resource limits, and "average" army sizes, which tend to be around if not bigger then fortress a lot of the time, and our average Dwarf army, of which I've never seen a professional, trained, equipied army go over 100 dwarves, it presents a problem for the army arc. How are we going to send a large army able to compete with the humans, elves, and goblins when we have such limited populations, most of which are non-combat? Would we have to raises the "feasable threshold" on our own populations, or what?

I think it was mentioned that you would send specialists off to the hilldwarfs near your site to raise and train an army big enough to compete.  Basically, you'd only supply part of the forces necessary.

A Fortress with 500 Dwarves defies logic... Gates. You're looking at around 300 max for a really lucky save, and armies of over 100 are quite easy with significant portions of Fortress recruitment.

Part of the army arc is that you can join existing armies; which will be much larger than yours. Then you can start things like conscripting other conquered citizens which can increase your armies, whilst never being on screen within your Fortress (thus not impacting FPS). Then you can get really big armies.

Or you can retire forts without militaries and start a last one to conquer them all.

Train your dwarves to legendary military skills, send ten, watch them slaughter an army of 200 standard soldiers.

Easy to do, as they don't exist yet...  except in the FUTURE!

I think that's what you get if you atom-smash migrants... Quantum-packed dwarf pie.

It wouldn't be large, it'd be a band of 20 to 50 emotionally crippled danger-room trained dwarves decked in masterwork adamantine equipment.
