zoo? is that a thing?
« on: January 25, 2013, 02:01:13 pm »

I've heard people talk about constructing zoos. I didn't find a wiki entry for it, though.  Is there such a thing?  I noticed you can 'create (r)oom' from a built cage, but is that a zoo? Is there any beneficial effect to doing this?

I was thinking of putting my captured cyclops and chipmunk on exhibit in my dining hall.  Will this freak out my dwarfs, or please them, or have no effect?

A free range zoo would just be a bunch of rooms with glass walls, where you can drop creatures in from the top. This has no impact on dwarves, but it looks pretty. These animals will also breed with each other if possible, so populations may increase.

If you put the animal in a cage dwarves can admire the creature, and get happy or unhappy thoughts depending if they like the creature or not. Creatures in cages cannot get pregnant, but if they were pregnant before they were caged they can still give birth.

You can put an infinite number of creatures into a single cage. If you have a masterwork or artifact level cage stuffed with dozens or even hundreds of creatures, ranging from the very big to the very small, such as dragons, fluffy wamblers, and butterflies, and make a small meeting zone from the cage, you will get a lot of dwarves admiring the cage.

They will get happy thoughts from the very expensive cage itself, and also a second set of thoughts, either happy or unhappy, from the creatures inside the cage.

Basically, a zoo is just that: A room designated by a built cage. There is an effect, dwarves get (usually) happy thoughts from both the cage, and from whatever is inside the cage, particularly if they have a preference to that creature. They will most likely get a negative thought if it's vermin they detest in the cage, though.

So I should probably build the zoo somewhere else than my dining room, so only the dwarfs that like the animals will have to look at them...?

Just don't put any potentially objectionable animals in the cage. Any creature that can be hated can cause negative thoughts. Some dwarves like earthworms and will receive happy thoughts from seeing them, but most will hate them. Easier if you just don't put any worms in the cage. But if its a butterfly or a small bird then thoughts are far more likely to be positive rather than negative.

I've never seen a dwarf who hated any animal that isn't vermin.  So, any "large creature" should be fine.

All my dwarves like bogeymen for their terror-inspiring antics... no happy-zoo thoughts for me :(
