Less so, the highest quality can be purchased without trophies now, but they are quite pricy. Anything beyond two achievement slots is still trophies unlocked though.

Is it still pay-to-win?
Compared to 6 months ago?  Yes.

They did in fact open up the top/purple gear* to gold purchases, but that was rolled in around the same time the pay-to-win changes were implemented.  Trophies are still abysmally rare.
At the very least, they did lower stable upgrade costs... but that is about it.

Overall a resounding shrug.

EDIT: *Seems it was actually blue back then, but still, the purple stuff is expensive and maintenance costs will probably eat your face without trophies and/or have you neglect the other gladiators in your stable.

Meh, not playing it then.

Whenever I play a game like this, taking a look at the advantages given to paying players kills the excitement I have for the game. They are better off making this game pay-to-play.

I've been getting nothing but frustration.

"Oh new update that actually changes a lot of things! Time to try out Armok's new skill-" Randomly matched against one of the Subjects with full purple 50 attacks per second DEAD.

I was hoping the update would make dual wielders less OP, that's the worst part of this game to me.

Yea, proper Dual Wielders really can destroy my 2-handers right now.  Especially if they get a stun or something that slows em down...

My 2-Handers attack once every 2-3 rounds versus 2-3 attacks from a dual wielder EVERY turn.  And many of them can hurt as hard as I can deal, per hit... plus status effects.

On that note, one of my new characters, dual wielding Theatrics has practically glided up to the top of Juggernaut with my 2-hander Warrior.  And the warrior is my first character too, there is like... an 8 level difference between the two.

Maybe I should have taken the chance to respec her into dual wield... and maybe should have abused the heck out of the free respec too...

EDIT: Mind you, my dual wield theatrics hits like an adolescent schoolgirl against the 'better' gladiators, since I have not really invested much in her.  She can make things bleed at least.  Also, she has 13 kills to my warrior's 11 kills.  Blargh.
(Technically, her namesake is of a little schoolgirl... so it is a somewhat appropriate analogy.)

Eh I run only one dual wielder and he sucks. His name is tekagi, dual claw bloodletter. Either way the all out super active super agressive dual wield blitzkills are no longer as prevelant, as was the case before update.
You might want to revise activity and bloodlust post update, especially with rage. Lot of changes and going all out is no longer without consequence, thereby rage is a lot less forgiving for chosing the wrong strategy now. Supposably rages are a tad weaker now, but people are still figuring 'em out.
From what I gather though two hand rage is a lot more viable then it was. Adrenaline rush helps keep you alive a bit longer to start getting some hits in, and the changes to armor encumbrance means you're more likely to attack first against heavily armored opponents. There's even ways to brutalize the defensive types with annhilate.

My 2-Handers attack once every 2-3 rounds versus 2-3 attacks from a dual wielder EVERY turn.  And many of them can hurt as hard as I can deal, per hit... plus status effects.
That's a little slow, what are you running, war? As a rage with a two hand you probably want to get a hit in every round, my two hand war gets a hit in every other round and he's a sluggish as hell trug.

I have both a warrior and a rage 2-hander.  The Rage actually runs out of gas much faster then the Warrior...  normal strategy versus parry strategy.  It could probably be the Parry that is slowing down my Warrior's attack rate...
As for the Rage... yea... there are times that she does get into the 1 attack per 2-3 turns thing.  I've had to do a lot of tweeking with the rage, between # of attacks, bloodlust and endurance.

I made an entirely new stable that is probably going to be all Wars, maybe one Theatric.

My first one started with well rounded stats [70 Strength. 70 Int. 73 Agility. 75 Size. 70 Stamina. 71 Presence. 66 Chi.] and I am making him a defensive pole-arms War.

Could this guy be effective in the long run?

EDIT: I should mention that he will only be using spears too.

Well, my current main Warrior is 2-hander polearm.

Glided up to Juggernaut, hit wall.  Now competing in top 10.  She is like 8 levels higher then everyone else in the tier, still loses roughly half the battles.  But yea, probably doesn't help that I don't put any monies to make her advance faster.  Anyways, totally fine sitting there camping the battle royale.

Armok is doing much better with a blue great sword that I just bought.
With a great axe he was attacking maybe once every 2-3 rounds, sometimes less, and when he did hit it was pretty mediocre damage. Now he attacks nearly every round and most hits are 400+

Do gladiators have some sort of hidden weapon preference?

Not that I know of, but I wouldn't be surprised if they had. What I hear there's hidden modifiers but I don't  think anybody knows the extent of it.
Can't say I've had a similar experience but I do know differend glads work better with different activity/bloodlust for no apparent reason. I think they might also have different preferred attack moves but that might just be me seeing things.
