Starting out I didn't quite understand the z-levels. Embarked next to a river, made a moat by channeling on the surface.

The channels intersected my farm plots about three squares away from my main staircase. So I ended up diverting an entire river into my fort. Flooded everything from the bottom up. I didn't even notice at first, since I was watching my miners dig the channel up above. By the time I DID notice, it was too late.

A couple forts later I discovered the joys of preparing meals to compress food, and ended up cooking all my plump helmets, wiping out my seed supply.

My first DF experience was waaaaaaaaay back in the pre .40d age. Almost starved to death a bunch of times while trying to figure out how to make farming work, living on giant roaches and whatever the poor herbalist could pick.

Bloody massacres from goblins, after they used trolls to smash down the doors, and slaughtered all the war dogs. Only survived by mass-drafting the whole fortress into wrestlers and squashing them to death in the narrow hallways.

Tantrums of horror ensued sortly afterwards...

Eventually, I had to abandon. But I learned valuable lessons on that fortress. Valuable lessons.

Well, I used to restart the fortress every time I lost a dwarf with any level of skill, almost purely as an excuse to try to build a better design next time.  Then I realized though some room value is lost from lack of engravings, (i rarely engrave anyway - a great dining room is apparently any room with 8 basalt tables and chairs? ), I can really undo almost any other kind of mistake, so... I don't newfort constantly.

I still constantly do dumb stuff like embark places without any iron in them whatsoever, though.

Install.
Look around.
Abandon.
Open again a week later.
Spawn a world.
Embark.
Look around.
Rage quit.
Uninstall.
Reinstall.
Spawn a world.
Embark.
Abandon.
Embark.
Dig a room into the dirt.
Make a keg of ale.
Claim Success.
Abandon.

You all do know that we everytime we gen a world in DF, a new universe is created somewhere, and everytime we delete a save we kill a whole world?
Aye, we are Armok, god of blood, evil, villager gutting, fortress building, legend making and elf thongs.

I didn't understand how to trade, so a few caravans came and left with nothing. How much did it hamper the development of the fortress I will never know. I've also based the layout around a one-tile staircase. With over 400 dwarves it becomes a problem.

I'm still learning quite basic things from time to time, like using various types of stairs.

When I was a newb I just played adventure mode to get used to Dwarf fortress's.. style. I also didn't know that when you had a wall diagonal to another, that wasn't a closed space.

I had a dwarf die. So I designated a graveyard outside, had a nice wall built around it, and the dwarves put the body there. And then they were unhappy that the body was rotting, so I ordered a wooden coffin built so that they could properly bury the fellow. Which they didn't do on their own, so I tried to build the coffin in the graveyard, build it outside, and make the graveyard accept coffins, none of which got the body buried. Eventually there was a tantrum spiral on account of the rotting and that was that. Maybe I just needed shovels....
