After a wagonless trading siege debacle last year, this year the caravan came in full force.
Anyone seen such a caravan before? The unit list showed 61 entries, 3 of which where wild animals (the rest yak cows, wagons and traders).

From what I know, the caravans bring more to trade if you gave them a lot of valuable stuff last year.
Might take a while to unpack though :P

Now let them in, close the entrance and wait for them to get insane. Then, wait for an elven caravan or gobbo siege and open the gates. Profit.

One time only profit since the next caravan will be much smaller since the traders vary size with profitability.  And also you'd get a lot of stuff that is probably "junk" as far as your fortress is concerned.

After the first few caravans the issue for me is generally not having items for trade to the caravan, it is the caravans having enough items I want from them compared to the piles of worn clothing, goblin gear, food, and other items I have that can be traded.  Almost a reason to settle in a place where I need the caravans for iron and bronze to melt down for weapons and armor - makes the trade system and patrols to protect their entry more important.

Take advantage of a dwarven caravan.  They won't siege you ever, just don't kill them.  Keep the large armed caravans for gobbo sieges or elven ones if you piss them off.  The cost is a smaller caravan though, so only do this if you're low on military.

Im good, I just need their iron/steel since i've embarked on a glacier with no iron at all.
So far I had built my pump stack out of goblinite.
Now I bought up the whole caravan though :)

I get those once in a while after I've traded several bins worth of cut gems.

Actually they had two bags of seeds I wanted and something like thirty Steel Anvils.
