For some reason,my  game doesn't allow me to designate mining, I designate one point, then another, but the ground isn't highlighted yellow, nor does my miner do anything.

Erm ...

Press [d] to start designating.
If the cursor is aboveground when you do this, you have 'chop trees' activated, so just press [d] twice to make sure you're designating 'mining'. The game is now paused.

Now either a) click on an underground square with the mouse, or b) move the cursor somewhere, press Enter, move the cursor a bit (it should now be dragging a highlighted area). Press Enter again to designate.

To build a down stair: d, j, move cursor, Enter, Enter.

The miner will only start mining if you have (or rather, he has) a pick (by default you start with picks, so you should have 2 if you didn't sell them on the Embark screen) ... and if he can access that square, so make sure to connect your [d][d] designated area to the outside world.

(So you'll have to dig the entrance first. And maybe some stairs to allow your miner to go from the starting location with the wagon to the entrance.)

What id you press d-d-enter-enter?

And also are you sure you mine in the earth? Not the surface? You should designate actual tiles which are occupied by rock wall.
If you want to go down you should mine out a ramp on the level below or dig downstairs on the "z" level and up/down stairs on the level "z-1".

Thanks, you made it much more simple, the wiki didn't exactly tell me to dig in the earth
