Far Cry 3 Technical problems
« on: January 03, 2013, 05:11:45 am »

   HEY GUYS!

I did a search on Bay12 and couldn't find a relevant topic (I may just have missed it or been looking in the wrong place) but I recently bought Far Cry 3 and quickly became savy to poor FPS and Nvidia driver issues, so I decided to start a topic that people can post suggestions/more information about and so forth.

Basically, the issue I have is my system (CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 840 @3.2Ghz, GPU: Nvidia EVGA GTX 570 1280mb, RAM: 8GB DDR3 @1333) is well inside the recommended area and the 'optimal' settings Far Cry 3 gave me was Very High with MSAA x2 and V-Sync 1 Frame.  However, playing at those settings is impossible due to framerate dropping to <20 whever I move the mouse.  Even if I have EVERYTHING on Low, no MSAA etc, it only just manages to stay above 30 all of the time.  I've install the latest Geforce Driver (310.70 I think?) and that actually helped quite a bit, but it's still tedious trying to play like this.

Thanks in advance for any help!

P.S. If there is another relevant thread and I'm just being incompetent, feel free to move this or whatever happens to topics-that-don't-make-the-cut.

Have you tried the steam forums or the Far Cry 3 official forums? Usually, those give you a solution to technical problems :)

Iv played the game perfectly with an AMD Athlon 455, 4 gb ram and a hd6850, not a single drop in FPSs so i guess its not a hardware problem.

No more than 50 Degrees, it can handle up to 101 and it gets a lot hotter when I play ARMA/Skyrim, I'm fairly sure it's a driver issue - I guess I'll just have to wait for a patch/new Nvidia driver.  Thanks for the help though :P

It's not an nvidia driver issue because I run a gtx 570 with the current driver without this problem. Perhaps it's an audio driver? Or an antivirus process running? Or it could even be a power supply issue. I had random slowdowns until I replaced my seemingly fine power supply recently.

It's a 700 Watt, should be fine.  I can play everything else fine (Skyrim on full, Dishonoured on full etc.).  I was wondering if it might be because it's a console port?  My computer's never run them well at all.  Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Conviction runs with lag on medium settings and GTA IV runs with Lag on lowest settings.  But like you said, you've got the same GPU.  How many frames did you let the GPU buffer in game?

Have you turned on any advanced graphics options in Nvidia control panel?

Also did you update the drivers from the nvidia site or Windows Update?

Updated the drivers from Geforce website - always have always will - and I've had a tweak around inside the Nvidia control panel forcing Vertical Sync because the in-game one eats CPU usage and I think I always forced FXAA, might have to check that though..  What do you mean 'advanced graphics options'?

I only changed that after I ran all the FPS tests, I didn't even notice a difference.  And the whole fact I would have to turn them off is what's annoying me - according to Ubisoft I shouldn't have to (Grrrrrr at console ports and Uplay's tacky overlay).

I don't think the Overlay has anything to do with it, I was just ranting because as of a patch they released today I can't access the Steam overlay while playing Far Cry 3, which just made me want to cry.
